5. What is a paragraph? - a group of sentences - the first word of each paragraph is indented How are these sentences related? What makes a good paragraph? Usually 5 or more sentences The sentences flow with transitional words/phrases Varied kinds of sentences Compound, Complex, and Compound/Complex sentences. • All sentences are about the same idea or topic • Begins with a topic sentence • Several sentences support the topic sentence with evidence from the text • Several sentence analyze the evidence • Ends with a concluding sentence

Topic Sentences • Think on your own: Identify the elements of the following topic sentences. • Jackie Robinson was one of the cleverest base runners in modern baseball. • From the time the artist Georgia O’Keeffe was young, she was interested in painting a part of a whole scene. • Harriet Tubman’s first outstanding quality is her bravery. • What will the supporting sentences prove in each of the above topic sentences? • A paragraph usually begins with a topic sentence • Example: Some amusement park rides can be frightening experiences. • Topic sentences can be divided into two elements • The topic – amusement park rides (objective) • The thesis/controlling idea – frightening experience (subjective) • The topic sentence is not effective without the thesis/controlling idea. • Third possible element: Essays usually have multiple paragraphs, therefore the topic sentence should include a transitional phrase to show movement from one paragraph to another. • Example: First of all, some amusement park rides can be frightening experiences. • The supporting sentences should prove the thesis/controlling idea. • E’s and A’s

According to the text, “Claudette could sit only in the ‘colored’ section of the bus. When the colored section was full the ‘White-only’ section was empty, Claudette had to stand.” In other words, no African American was allowed to sit in front of or next to a white person. The author describes one day when all seats in the colored section were full, Claudette sat in the white-only section. When the bus driver told her to move, Claudette was arrested and taken to the jail. She bravely decided to stand up for herself as well as others around her. This incident took place just a few months before Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus. Perhaps Claudette’s courage helped Rosa Parks in her act of courage.
