Everything you need to know about Homophones. Which Word Should I Use??
What is a homophone?? • A homophone is a group of words that sound the same when you say them, but are spelled differently and have different meanings. • A homonym is a group of words that sound the same, are spelled the same, and have different meanings.
For example… • Their, There, They’re • These are homophones. They sound the same, but are very different when it comes to spelling and usage. • Bear, Bear • These are homonyms. One means an animal, the other means to carry. They are spelled and pronounced the same way, but again are very different in usage.
Why can’t we just use spell check?? • Because most spell checkers will not catch all errors like these. • Because someone proofreading for you may not catch them either. • Because if you use the wrong version of a word, the meaning of your sentence changes completely.
Some quick tips… • If you’re about to use a contraction, say it to yourself with the words separated and see if it makes sense. If not, try a different version of the word. • Know the parts of speech. If you know which version of a word is a verb and which is a noun, you’ll know which one to use.
