  7. Tosimulateimpact on coolingandheatingloads Tocalculatepay back fortheuser Toinput Life Cycle Analysis → esp-r * Simple, fast and easy-to-usesoftware More precisethanmanualcalculationsbased on ASHRAE & ISO13790 and presented in June 2010 Ideal forBuildingsimulations: bigrepositoryofstandardmaterials PCM modulerecentlydeveloped * ESP-r is an integrated energy modelling tool for the simulation of the thermal, visual and acoustic performance of buildings and the energy use and gaseous emissions associated with associated environmental control systems. In undertaking its assessments, the system is equipped to model heat, air, moisture and electrical power flows at user determined resolution. The system is designed for the Unix operating system, with supported implementations for Solaris, Linux (SuSE, Ubuntu, etc.), OSX 10.5 and 10.6. It can also be run on Windows in the Cygwin environment, or it can be run in native Windows (XP Vista). ESP-r has a world-wide development community and its distribution is managed under Subversion source code control. The system is made available at no cost under an Open Sourcelicence. Objectives of Thermal simulation

  8. Industrial building, 32mx32mx5m, 15% windows, Palermo climate standard bitumen based membrane, no insulation insulation + standard bitumen based membrane Nuroof concept 1 (reflective membrane), no insulation       insulation + Nuroof concept 1 Nuroof concept 2 insulation + Nuroof concept 2 Nuroof concept 2 insulation + Nuroof concept 2 Thermal simulations: used models EFFECT OF STANDARD INSULATION (5cm) EFFECT OF REFLECTANCE (from IR 0,1 to IR 0,65) EFFECT OF REFLECTANCE AND PCM (0,4KG/M2) EFFECT OF REFLECTANCE AND PCM+ (2KG/M2) roof waterproof membrane (4.5 mm) PS insulation layer (0->50 mm) Vermiculite concrete layer (30 mm) Concrete blocks (100 mm) ceiling

  9. Assumptions (1) HVAC Zone control: During working hours (8h-18h weekdays, 8h-13h Saturday) the control maintains the temperature between 20°C and 26°C according to comfort living conditions, for the rest of the hours and during Sunday heating control set point is moved to 13°C to avoid ice formation in pipelines. Internal gains (values from reference study on industrial buildings in California): Occupants: Total horizontal surface of each floor is 1024 m², an average of 36 workers between 8h and 18h. No people in during the weekend. Person working: 125W (65.5W sensible, 65.5W latent) Total: 4500 W Lights: 18W/m², this is 18432W sensible. Lights in the office are off from 18h till 8h of the next morning. During working hours (8h-18h) all lights are on. All lights off during weekends. Equipment: 29000W (20000W sensible, 9000W latent / 0.4 radiant, 0.6 convection) taking into account the presence of laptops, printers, spot welders, ovens, electronic testing equipment, microscopes, air compressors, vacuum pumps, coffee machines, etc. During weekends overall energy consumption is estimated to be 5% of weekdays overall consumption (assumed as stand-by condition), i.e., 1450W (1000W sensible, 450W latent). Air Infiltration/Ventilation: An average infiltration rate of 0.7 air changes per hour throughout the working hours and 0.3 during remaining hours is considered. This implies around 12 changes of the whole volume of air inside the building for weekdays and 7.2 air changes per hour in Sunday. No ventilation included. Note: According to ESP-r all ventilations with atmospheric air are considered as infiltrations.

  10. Assumptions (2) External wall (UNI TS 11300-1) Ground floor commercial building Door (http://www.ocmflex.com/it/index.shtml) Double glazed windows (http://www.double-glazing-uk.co.uk/U_values.asp)

  11. Assumptions (3) Waterproof top layer + white paint (acrylic paint VIVECRYL) Material: Polyester (STFI) Thickness: 0,5 mm (STFI) Conductivity: 0.15 W/(m*K) (STFI - NTUA) Density: 100 g/m2 textile+ 100 g/m2 paint (STFI- NTUA) Specific heat: 1200 J/(kg*K) polyester + 3000 J/(kg*K) water-based paint (total value evaluated by weighting each specific heat value on weight) (STFI - NTUA) Absorptivity: 0.25 (STFI - NTUA) we have chosen this value as the lowest from the NTUA experimental set Functional layer with PCM in a polymer emulsion Material: Polyester (STFI- TNO) Thickness: 4 mm (STFI– TNO) Conductivity: 0.25 W/(m*K) at 25°C when PCM is solid, 0.14 W/(m*K) at 40°C when PCM is liquid (TNO) Density: 200 g/m2 textile + 0,4 kg/m2 PCM (TNO) corresponding to 80% impregnation Specific heat: 1200 J/(kg*K) polyester + 29700 J/KgK estimated from one DSC measurement Melting/crystallization temperature: 28°C (TNO) PCM Latent heat:  100 J/g (TNO)

  14. Thermal Analysis Conclusions and Next Steps • Conclusions do not significantlydifferfrommanualcalculationsbased on ASHRAE & ISO13790: • PCM do not have a significantimpact. Onlyvery large quantities (>2 kg) have a significantimpact on surfacetemperatureandsmall on energysavings • Standard insulation do not providesignificantadvantages („hat“ effect)e • Reflectiveroofaloneisthe ideal solution in warm andtemperateclimateslike southern europe: itgets a significantenergysaving (upto 23% withtheminimum IR valuefrom NTUA preliminarytests)
