  1. Volunteering Matters in the West MidlandsChair Professor Mel Chevannes CBE FRCNMarch 2011

  2. The region is served by 14 top-tier local authorities: Birmingham Coventry Dudley Herefordshire Sandwell Shropshire Solihull Staffordshire Stoke on Trent Telford & Wrekin Walsall Warwickshire Wolverhampton Worcestershire The Region

  3. Volunteering partnerships – depth and breadth considerable variation across the region Promoting volunteering – overwhelmingly undertaken by voluntary and community agencies. Greater leadership by local authorities to increase impact and take-up of volunteering opportunities. Data collection and Databases – variable, unco-ordinated Overview of Findings Birmingham Volunteer Centre saw 2,000 people looking to volunteer in 2007, this had increased to over 14,000 by 2010

  4. Widening Participation Good Practice arrangements – service level agreement; three-year strategic grants Lack of a systematic framework for gathering, recording or evaluating data on good practice in volunteering, and measuring effectiveness and outcomes. Obstacles/risks to volunteering -internal factors: demographic pattern, capacity of agencies - external factors: resources, changing employment patterns Overview of findings More than half of Sandwell’s volunteers are from ethnic minority backgrounds and nearly half are aged 29 or under In Worcestershire most volunteers are aged over 65

  5. West Midlands Volunteering Development Council – assessment of local authorities’ response

  6. Volunteering…..what next Is not a panacea, is not cost free, or a replacement for services needed in localities. In the coming months and year, however, different approaches are required to promote and sustain volunteering. Public bodies working in partnership with others should provide leadership to improve impact and take-up of volunteering opportunities.
