(Excluding summer school)

  6. Earn As, Bs, & Cs for college! Grades and Credit • “D” grades = 5 credits • Credit for high school graduation only! • “D” grades don’t count for college admission. • Not given extra GPA point for honors/AP • “F” grades = 0 credits • If you fail a required graduation course you MUST make it up in summer school or the next year. Students are responsible for registering for summer school classes!

High School and College & Career Planning—The BIG picture… • Find YOUR best path • Identify YOUR career goals/interests and post high school plans (explore https://xello.gusd.net/or https://www.cacareerzone.org/) • Discuss YOUR plans with your parents and friends • Where have you been? Where are you going? • Review graduation checklist and transcripts • Consider UC/CSU “a-g” requirements • Your plan should be flexible and modified each year • How do you plan to “fit it all in”? • Review fall Class Presentation Powerpoints on the website

  8. The 4 year plan is a guide to help choose and track courses. It can be used as a graduation/UC/CSU checklist. You DO NOT need to return this with your registration forms.

  9. PLANNING FOR 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR

  10. Complete the Grade Level Registration Form All students take 6 classes each semester. (Some Seniors needing <50 credits may opt for 5 classes.) Complete each subject section on your planning sheet for next year. NOTE: If you are planning to take a class in Summer School, indicate intent to enroll on your Registration sheet and complete summer forms when available!

  11. Completing the Registration Form • Answer the questions at the top of the form about post high school goals, career/major interests, and Career Education (CTE) pathways • If offered, are you willing to take a “0” period class? The maximum number of classes would still = 6.

  12. 9th Grade Registration Form

English • Circle the desired English or indicate ELD level. • Placement is ultimately based upon the grades you earn this year. • Counselors will confirm your choices and eligibility before you are placed in the class. • Eng 9 Advanced students should have As or Bs in Advanced English 8 or strong As in regular Eng 8.

Math • Circle or indicate your next math placement request. • Integrated Math I, Integrated Math II or Integrated II/III Accelerated will be offered. • Counselors will confirm prerequisite criteria before you are placed in accelerated math: CAASPP, Math Diagnotic test, iReady, semester grades, teacher recommendation • Submit a waiver, if necessary. • Students are expected to be enrolled in a math course all 4 years-discuss appropriate level with your math teacher.

  16. 9th Grade: Health/Social Science • Health and Human Geography have been preloaded for all students. -Human geography is not a graduation requirement. If you take health during the summer, both Health and Human Geography will be removed and replaced with a year-long elective. • If you plan on taking Health during summer, check the box for “summer”. • Write top 2 preferences on the side to replace health. • Summer info will be available on the website March 1st. • Counselors will replace Health and Human Geography with an alternate course AFTER summer school enrollment is confirmed.

Science CV requires all students to be enrolled in science for 3 years. 9th grade: Circle Biology or Medical Biology • Medical Biology embeds medical and health related topics into the general biology curriculum. It focuses on preparation for the Academy of Science and Medicine but it is not required as a pre-requisite for the Academy. • If you successfully complete Biology in summer school, the counselors will adjust your schedule to Chemistry in July.

  18. PE: 9th and 10th • Circle PE, Yoga, AFJROTC, Dance, Marching Band or Drill Team. • Sports, Int/Adv Dance, and Pep Squad have “try-outs”. If you plan to try out for next year, please check the bulletin for dates and more information. • Register for both semesters of your PE choice in the student portal. Please do not pre-register for a sport or pep squad. • In 11th and 12th grade you may take PE or a sport for elective credit   Athletic Information Night: Monday, May 20th, 6:30 p.m.,CVHS Main Gym Counselors will consult lists from coaches for all sports.

BOLD courses are open to 9th graders. • Foreign Languages • Visual or Performing Arts • Career Prep/CTE • Other Academic Electives Please note: Once a graduation category is completed, any course in that subject area counts as elective credits Be sure to write alternates for these classes!

Consider including a CTE Pathway in your 4 year plan. Apply for the Medical Academy in the spring of your 9th grade year. CTE also offers classes after school or on weekends includingWater Safety, Cosmetology, and Game Design. Sign up for extra CTE classes in the fall with your counselor

Application & Audition Classes • If you want to take any special audition or application class, include alternates! • It is YOUR RESPONSIBILTY to contact the teacher. • Check the CVHS website for application information, audition dates, and DEADLINES. • Do not enter special classes in the portal. Counselors will check the teacher lists before placing you in the class.

  26. Complete the Time Management Tracker Use the estimated times on the course list to calculate the homework hours for the 2019-20 courses you choose. Focus on BALANCE: School Extra-curricular Daily Living Total hours = 168

  27. Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors Courses • Must sign and submit an AP/Honors Contract • Must sign a waiver if you do not meet recommended pre-requisites (A/B grades) • Do not overload with AP/Honors courses • UC/CSU only count a total of 8 semester bonus points when weighting GPAs

  28. Read and initial each statement. Attach the contract to your registration form. Honors/AP Contract ALL FORMS MUST BE SIGNED.

  29. IF you are requesting an Honors/AP level course and do not meetthe recommended CVHS or GUSD pre-requisites, complete and attach a waiver to your registration form . Waiver Form ALL FORMS MUST BE SIGNED.

  30. Reminders…When Choosing Classes • Check high school graduation requirements. • Consider your 4-year plan and post high school goals. • Consider your Time Management Tracker. • Check required classes for each grade. • Check Cal State/UC or other college requirements. • Check math flow charts to determine next course. • Talk to friends and teachers about the content of the classes. • Check the online Course Catalog on student.gusd.net. • Sign and submit AP/Honors contracts and any necessary waivers.

Online Registration/Q Student Connection • ALL students will submit course requests online through Student Connection student.gusd.net for the 2019-20 school year. • A PowerPoint and a video explaining the process are posted in the Registration section of the CVHS Counseling website https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHb_vgc_ELc • Students can reset passwords on student.gusd.net • Students who do not enter courses online will be given last priority for courses. • If you do not have a “future” status (permit students) write a note on the top of your registration form.

Online Registration • Submit all course requests ONLINE prior to returning your registration form. • Counselors will review everything after spring break and make any adjustments. • Any requests for changes after submitting your forms must be submitted on a Change Request Form no later than May 24th. • Change Request Forms will be available online and in the counseling office after spring break.

  33. Return Forms Where: To your History teacher When: By February 21st. (Late forms should be returned to the RMS counseling office or directly to CV.) What to Include: • 2019-2020 Registration form with parent & student signatures. Be sure to list alternate choices for all electives. • Completed Time Management Tracker • Honors/Advanced Placement Contract (signed and attached, if applicable) • Pre-requisite waiver (if needed)

  34. Remember!!! NO CHANGES after May 24th, 2019 NO TEACHER REQUESTS • The master schedule is built by the administrators and schedules are generated by a computer program. • Counselors only look at conflicts. • With 3,000 students at CVHS it is like an 18,000 piece puzzle. • A change in one class creates a domino effect for all other classes.

REMEDIAL To improve skills or REPEAT required FAILED courses YOU are responsible for returning summer school forms to register. CV counselors will notify eligible students. FREE ADVANCEMENT • Offered through Glendale Educational Foundation • To take Heath, Biology, or ceramics • Indicate your intent to take Summer School and list alternates. • YOU must register/pay online. • Registration begins in March • FEE based courses • www.gefsummerschool.org

  36. Summer SchoolCheck the Website in March!!! STUDENTS MUST HAVE PRIOR WRITTEN APPROVAL for all courses taken outside of CVHS or GEF. (including online or other public/private schools) Request Forms will be available on the CVHS website and in the CVHS counseling office. Check Accreditation, UC approval, and NCAA status of school or program. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure all summer grades/transcripts are submitted before school begins in August.
