  1. Monogamy • the practice or state of being married to one person at a time • Swans are naturally monogamous creatures, they mate for life.

  2. Polygamy • the practice or custom of having more than one wife or husband at the same time. • Foragers did not marry, but they had polygamous relationships.

  3. Patriarchy • a system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is traced through the male line • For many years, only men could be kings and women were not allowed to rule in patriarchal societies.

  4. Matriarchy • a system of society or government ruled by a woman or women. • Many indigenous societies are matriarchal.

  5. Agriculture • the science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for the growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide food, wool, and other products. • The agrarian revolution refers to the start of agriculture.
