  15. What is a Junior Promotion? In the Faculty of Medicine, a junior promotion refers to promotion to the academic rank of Lecturer to Assistant Professor (clinical academic faculty appointment)

  16. Promotion is not granted as a reward for long-term service, but rather to recognize those who have excelled in specific aspects of the academic mission. Your academic activities, since the initial date of appointment, should showcase innovation, evidence and impact at a local or provincial level.

  17. Do you have any advice for others?

Key notes from the video: • Meet with your chief/professional development representative at your site on an annual basis • Identify items to collect along the process • Book dedicated time to keep your CV up-to-date • Make this a priority • Connect with a mentor • Identify important records to keep • Take a look at your career around 3-5 years • GO FOR IT! • From day one – start tracking your academic activities (emails, schedules, teaching, hours, evaluations, workshops you have done, etc) • Create an electronic filing method to organize and file your work = start early! • Linkages – connect with successful faculty • Keep track of your residents • Seek advice on how to prepare your dossier

  21. #1 Criteria Option Faculty may apply for a junior promotion under the category of Sustained Commitment in ONE of the following categories: • Teaching Effectiveness • Educational or Curriculum Development • Creative Professional Activity (CPA)

  22. #1 Criteria Option What is sustained commitment? • A continuous and long standing commitment • A dedication and responsibility to your discipline • Active commitment to and championing • Demonstrated evidence/leadership/education scholarship within our department and the University community • A sustained and successful commitment to, and engagement in, DFCM academic activities and/or professional practice.

  23. How much time serves as “sustained commitment”? There may be differences in the timing of promotion because of competing responsibilities and other factors: • On average, a faculty member holding a full time appointment would require a minimum of 3 years • On average, a faculty member holding a part time appointment would require a minimum of 3-5 years • On average, a faculty member holding an adjunctappointment would require approximately 10 years

  24. DFCM Letter of Offer How do I know if I hold an Adjunct – Part Time – Full Time appointment? A clinical faculty appointment type is based on the time engaged in DFCM academic activities. • Full Time80% of his/her professional working time • Part Time Less than 79%, but for 20% or more of his/her professional working time • Adjunct Less then 20% of his/her professional working time.

Academic ActivitiesTEACHING In the Faculty of Medicine, teachers and educators can show evidence of teaching in one or more of the following levels: • Undergraduate education • Graduate education • Postgraduate medical education • Post-doctoral training • Continuing education and faculty development • Patient/public education

Academic ActivitiesEDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT • Evidenced by planning of a new curriculum or education programs • Evidenced by the production of new education material • Details of educational or curriculum development must be part of the dossier: • A statement of the importance of the educational or curriculum development • The candidate should have been a significant participant in the planning and development of major curricular or educational offerings • Supporting details documentation

  30. Academic ActivitiesCREATIVE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY (CPA) The Faculty of Medicine recognizes CPA under the following three broad categories: • Professional innovation and creative excellence • Contribution to the development of professional practice • Exemplary professional practice

Academic ActivitiesCREATIVE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY (CPA) • Professional innovation and creative excellence Professional innovation in the Faculty of Medicine may include: • The making or developing of an invention, development of new techniques, conceptual innovations or educational programs inside or outside the University • Example: continuing medical education or patient education To demonstrate professional innovation: • The candidate must show an instrumental role in the development, introduction and dissemination of an invention, a new technique, a conceptual innovation, a QI or an education program Creative excellence, in such forms such as communication media and video presentations may be targeted at various audiences from the lay public to health care professionals.

Academic ActivitiesCREATIVE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY (CPA) • Contribution to the development of professional practices Professional innovation in the Faculty of Medicine may include: • Demonstration and exemplary practice will be in the form of leadership in the profession, or in professional societies, associations or organizations that has influenced standards or enhances the effectiveness of discipline. To demonstrate contribution: • The candidate must demonstrate leadership (membership and holding office is not considered evidence of CPA) Examples may include (but not limited to) guideline development, health policy development, government policy, community development, regulatory committees, setting of standards.

  33. Academic ActivitiesCREATIVE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY (CPA) • Exemplary professional practice To demonstrate exemplary professional practice, the candidate must show that his or her practice is recognized as exemplary by peers and has been emulated or otherwise had an impact on practice.

  34. Academic ActivitiesRESEARCH in EDUCATION Successful research leads to the advancement of knowledge through contributions of an original nature. Promotion to Assistant Professor on research requires that the candidate has: • A record of sustained and current productivity in research and in research-related activities, such as a record of scientific publications demonstrating that the research has led to a significant source of new information in the field, originality and importance to the field

  37. #2 Criteria Option ADVANCED DEGREE Faculty may apply for a junior promotion under the category of Advanced Degree if they have successfully completed a recognized graduate program(or an advanced training experience deemed to be equivalent to a Master's level program)post-MD. It is expected that the candidate will have at minimum 1 - 2 published first author peer-reviewed publications at the time of request for promotion.

Application Dossier A Checklist Guide The checklist guide for a junior promotion describes the documents by which the Department Appointments Committee (DAC) requires to determine if a promotion is “supported” to go forward to HR for approval. • It provides detailed information of the required documents • Identifies who is responsible to complete what form (Chief / Division Director or the faculty member or the administrator) • Tips on completing a teaching dossier • All templates/samples are available on the website in Word  http://www.dfcm.utoronto.ca/junior-promotion
