Welcome to the 5th Meeting of CarboEurope-IP • kick-off: Spoleto, Italy 2004 1st annual meeting: Dublin, Ireland 2005 2nd annual meeting: Levi, Finland 2006 3rd annual meeting: Crete, Greece 2007 4th annual meeting: Poznan, Poland 2008 5th final annual meeting: ???
Special welcome to • our scientific officer in Brussels Anastasios Kentarchos • our scientific advisory board • Dennis Baldocchi • Scott Denning • Roger Francey • Neil Turner
Special thanks to our host Janusz Olejnik
Objectives of CarboEurope-IP: A reminder: „ The overarching aim of CarboEurope-IP is to understand, quantify and predict the terrestrial carbon balance of Europe and associated uncertainties at local, regional and continental scale.“
The European Carbon Balance • by top-down inverse modelling • by bottom-up modelling based on eddy covariance measurements and on changes in Carbon pools • To develop a innovative data assimilation framework
Processes and Model Predictions 4. to determine the partitioning of fluxes 5. to quantify effects of management 6. to develop, evaluate and optimize ecosystem process models
Detection of Kyoto 7. to provide an observation system of atmospheric measurements 8. To develop the outline of a full Carbon accounting system for the second commitment period
In this conference we will learn about the progress made since Crete, and make sure that we reach the main goals of CarboEurope by end 2008
Details about the final year and the future will be discussed during the general assembley, specifically • the final report • a Carbon-cycle assessment needed by Brussels • possibly a carbon cycle event by end 2008 • the role of Carbon-cycle reserach in FP7 (interactions between ICOS-infrastructure and FP7-research projects), participation of Eastern Europe
In contrast to last year‘s conference when we invited other C-projects, this assembley will only discuss the progress and the final stages of CE-IP • The parallel sessions should be used to discuss the promised objectives to be met by end 2008 • Thursday will be used to discuss the future
