Aims of WP soils • Detection of changes in soil C-stocks within 4-5 years under different land use and climatic situations at 12 verification sites • Increase process understanding of carbon turnover in soils- mineralization experiments- particle size distribution- density fractionation- aggregate fractionation- analyses of stable isotopes (13C, 15N) • Supply soil information for the footprints of the main tower sites

Soil mapping • Results of soil mapping will provide information about:- homogeneity of sites with respect to soil types / C-stocks • data of representative soil pits: - C-stock and concentration - bulk density - stone content (estimated) - texture (estimated) • - pH • But not:CEC, soil physical parameters like water /air permeabilities, water content, etc.

Paper in prep, Schulze group and others • The following papers are „under preparation“: • Plot-scale variability of soil carbon stocks at European forest, grassland, and cropland sites(e.g. Schrumpf, Schöning, Schulze, ...) - geostatistical analyses of C stocks • - calculation of minimum detectable difference - possible reasons for variability: land-use type, variability of stone content, texture (depth to a stagnating horizon), etc. - comparison of results with eddy measurements: relation between expected changes and analytical possibilities • 2. Comparison of soil carbon maps with spatial information about soil respiration at CarboEurope sites(Schrumpf, Schöning/Weber, n.n.)

The impact of pedogenic oxides (Fe, Al) on C stocks and mineralization rates (e.g. Schrumpf, Grabe, Persson, Kaiser, Kögel-Knabner,...) - relation between clay content, pedogenic oxides and mineral associated organic matter + mineralization rates- first for deciduous forests, but also for other sites possible (analyses of pedogenic oxides under progress) 4. Heterotrophic soil respiration and soil carbon dynamics in a temperate deciduous forest (Hainich Forest) obtained from three different approches (e.g. Kutsch, Persson, Schrumpf, Moyano?, ...)Annual heterotrophic soil respiration data (Hainich, possibly Wetzstein, Gebesee) - soil model based on mineralisation rates (Tryggve Persson) - soil model based on soil respiration measurements (Werner Kutsch, maybe also including data of Fernando Moyano) - eddy data

  15. Area 6.1.1.3. The Global Carbon cycle - Greenhouse Gas budgets ENV.1.1.3.1: Impacts of climate variability, extreme events and increasing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations on terrestrial carbon storage, exchange flows and soil carbon dynamics. The aim is to better quantify the impacts of climate variability and extreme events on the carbon storage, exchange flows, and perturbations of soil functioning (including loss of organic matter) in European ecosystems (including agricultural land and forests) at the regional and continental scale. The impacts of changes in dissolved organic carbon quality and soil-water cycle interactions shall also be studied. Research should also address the effect of projected changes in climate and increasing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations on the key processes controlling the carbon cycle, and assess the vulnerability and future evolution of terrestrial sinks at European and global scale. Studies should draw on better integration of related biophysical processes, atmospheric and ecosystem observations, and state-of-the-art models.
