What is Freight? Freight or cargo can be defined as the products or the goods that are being transported, usually for commercial gain via ship. However, this term is now being used to define commercial transportation of goods by any means be it by air, land via container trucks and other modes of transport. Freight transportation is the process of conveying different types of goods from one point to another using a variety of transport modes. Several shipment categories are express, household goods, parcel, and freight shipments. View More- CLICK HERE
Who needs goods? Answer – this is easy; everybody on the planet, in some form or another. How are goods transported? Answer – by air, sea, rail, road, pipeline, conveyor, beasts of burden, individuals, and so on. Why are goods transported? Answer – because somebody, somewhere, needs them. In this respect we need to accept that people do not normally transport goods without an overriding reason for doing so. Where are goods taken from and delivered to? Answer - from everywhere and to everywhere. This isn’t a glib statement; rather, it is trying to come to terms with the fact that goods are taken from and to both of the frozen Poles, across the Equator, into space, into the depths of the sea and from every natural source until final delivery to an end user. What is the total value of goods in transit on any one day? Answer – impossible to calculate. The entire gross product of the world is calculated from trade and industry, which move goods every day of the year. View More- CLICK HERE
FREIGHT TRANSPORT STRUCTURE •Having looked at the role of freight transport in society, and examined how it supports the world as we know it, let’s now begin to examine the different supply chain structures, applications and components of freight transport systems that use transport as an integral element, and the structures and compositions of the different modes of transport. •Today, transport in the West is most commonly associated with supply chain operation. Many supply chains in themselves are often totally controlled by 3PL and/or 4PL operators, who work on behalf of customers or partners whose principle occupation is trade and not transport. •By allowing 3PL/4PL logistics and transport professionals to carry out distribution and transport roles, they are in effect freeing themselves up in order to concentrate on their own core activities. •Given that we need to think globally, as well as domestically and locally, when considering freight transport, we also need to think about the different modes of transport available to us to move goods and how they are structured and compare with each other. This examination takes for granted that all major modes of transport are also largely governed through legislative measures and statutory requirements aimed at standards of safe vehicle/craft design, build and maintenance and safe operation. •1. Road is by far the most commonly used mode of transport and one which is open to all users as part of the general infrastructure of a country Advantages: ‘door-to-door capacity, cheap, flexible, fast. Road is by far the most commonly used mode of transport and one which is open to all users as part of the general infrastructure of a country. In addition, it is the only mode which, in real terms, has a ‘door-to-door’ capacity, and this fact alone gives it many advantages over other modes, which, in some way or another, also need road to get the goods to them for collection or away from them for final delivery. Disadvantages: In addition, the effects of congestion, pollution, road unsuitability for the carriage of oversized goods or goods over very long distances and the associated tolls, taxes and infrastructure charges which seem to increase year on year add up to some considerable negative points, which many of us fail to recognise due to our almost total reliance on the road network in our personal and professional lives. If we agree that there is a need and there are needs for the road, then we must agree that they need management and control in the same way as any other operational system. In the case of roads. The resources needed for the roads include: Policing, both physical and electronically(Examples, regulations, price instruments and infrastructure investmenst) Accident and emergency provision ( emergency response) Lighting and signage ( Traffic lights and control signs) Service, fuel and rest areas (service stations Traffic control systems (traffic lights etc.) Temporary exclusion areas (for roadworks etc.) These items will be drawn largely from central, regional or local government and, where appropriate, in co-operation or joint ventures with private business. With regard to freight transport operation, road is probably the one mode which is easiest to enter, usually requiring nothing more than a Level 3 qualification, an approved centre of operation and 2 vehicle. These factors combine to make road attractive to hundreds of thousands of small operators operating just one or two vehicles. NB: A policy is a set of ideas or plans that is used as a basis for making decisions, especially in politics, economics, or business. View More- CLICK HERE
