Medieval Warfare. Beginning of Medieval Times. After the fall of the Roman Empire, western Europe was divided into smaller kingdoms, fighting over land. There were Viking invasions, from present day Denmark and Norway

Beginning of Medieval Times • After the fall of the Roman Empire, western Europe was divided into smaller kingdoms, fighting over land. • There were Viking invasions, from present day Denmark and Norway • There became Nobles, or Vassals, who made laws, were judges, and collected taxes • Knights were introduced as fighters dubbed under overlords who were paid to fight
Castles • Castles were homes to nobles and their family and servants. symbol of nobles power and protected • Castles had a lot of protection from attackers. Some had multiple walls and some were surrounded by other things such as moats • Castles had a main entrance through a gatehouse, then there was a portcullis, a heavy iron fence the defenders lowered with chains and pulleys when they were under attack • stairways in the towers always curved to the right so that knights coming down the stairs had room to swing their swords • Castles had drawbridges to keep enemies out and people in
Warfare • They would either take by siege or storm the castle.
Storming • used battering rams • flung missiles over the walls with catapults, used rocks, dead animals that spread disease • Used flaming arrows to try to set the roof on fire but wet animal skins as shingles would protect from fire
Catapults • Two types: Trebuchets and Mangonels
Seige • siege was less dangerous: attackers surrounded the castle, cut off its food supplies, and waited until the people inside surrendered because of starvation • when all else fails they would trick the defenders • during a siege: used both catapults, siege towers, ladder to climb wall, forked sticks to push away ladder, arrow loops to shoot through, guards hide behind merlons, threw rocks off of the talus which was an extended part of the castle with murder holes (rocks, boiling water), archers hide behind pavises: little wooden walls
Battlefield Warfare • Foot soldiers were paid to fight or had to from their lord, archers were trained to shoot long bows but some had crossbows that were more effective but longer to reload, pike men held spears to form a wall of sharp points: effective against knights on horses
