Common Core • Georgia joined with 47 other states well over a year ago to develop a set of core standards for K-12 in English language arts and mathematics. On June 2, the Common Core State Standards were released. These standards provide a consistent framework to prepare students for success in college and/or the 21st century workplace. These standards represent a common sense next step from the Georgia Performance Standards. The Georgia State Board of Education adopted the CCGPS on July 8, 2010.
Common Core • Students of Georgia: • Rigorous knowledge and skills needed to succeed in college and/or careers • Consistent expectations across states, regardless of whether they decide to go to school at Georgia Tech or UCLA, or find a job in Georgia, Maine or Indiana • Relevant content and application of knowledge through high-order skills
First Nine Weeks • Primary Reading Focus-Informational Text • ELACC6RI 1-10 Secondary Focus –Literary Text ELACC6RL 1-10 Writing Focus-Argumentative ELACC6W1, 4, 5, 6, 10
Writing • Step Up to Writing (Paragraph burrito) • Visual tool to help organize writing • Teaches students how to develop a thesis, utilize a variety of transitions, and support their reasoning with evidence, examples, and explanations
Grammar • Daily Grammar Practice • Supports the idea that students learn better in smaller increments over an extended period of time rather than “big chunks” of information • Each week, students have a sentence where they have to perform different activities each day
Scholastic Reading Skills • Reading Comprehension • Vocabulary Building • Conventions/grammar • Students self-assess
Journals • Students use journals for note-taking, writing, class work, and free-writing.
Vocabulary • Weekly vocabulary quizzes • Varies from teacher to teacher
Grading • Weekly vocabulary quizzes • Scholastic Reading assessments • Burrito writing (essays and paragraphs) • Class work • Projects/Outside Reading
