SPI 0501.1.5 Identify sentences with correct use of commas : review JSYB: Week 4, Day 2 Focusing on Commas: Correctly punctuate the following sentences. • While lying in front of the fire to warm up the boys carelessly tossed a ball back and forth. • A look of shock on her face, their mother watched helplessly as the out of control ball knocked over the lamps, the TV, and her priceless vase. • Crying, the boys trudged to their room knowing they would not see the light of day until June 24 2013. Graphic Organizer In your foldable: Commas in dates • A comma is used to separate the day of the month from the year. • A comma will NEVER be placed between the name of the month and the year. Example: On February 5, 2013, the great chocoboswell bird was spotted by the Wolf Hall 5th graders in a tree.

Writing Immigration
Ellis Island • Opened on January 1, 1892. • On the first day that Ellis Island was open, they processed 700 immigrants. • It closed its doors in 1954.
Ellis Island: Medical Tests • Doctors checked those passing through Ellis Island for more than 60 diseases and disabilities that might disqualify them from entry into the United States. • Those suspected of being afflicted with a having a disease or disability were marked with chalk and detained for closer examination. • All immigrants were checked closely for trachoma, a contagious eye condition that caused more detainments and deportations than any other ailment. To check for trachoma, the examiner used a buttonhook to turn each immigrant's eyelids inside out, a procedure remembered by many Ellis Island arrivals as particularly painful and terrifying.
Ellis Island • People could be detained on Ellis Island for many reasons. They could be held for up to a month if necessary. • Food was plentiful and good. • Once the medical test(s) were passed, immigrants had to answer a series of 29 questions. • After questioning was complete, those being allowed into the U.S. would go to the ticketing office to purchase a ticket to their next destination.
