TEDx Talks Deeper LEADERSHIP Dr. Denny RobertsQatar Foundation Education Division
Urgent need for Deeper Leadership in our World • Globalization • Technology • Environment • Population growth • Political and religious divisions • Changes in economic and geo-political balance • Finding the adaptive responses that will allow us to thrive
Adaptive leadership requires: Renegotiating loyalties Discerning essentials to conserve Tolerating tension Finding the resources to succeed Surfacing and managing contradictions Defining leverage points of complex systems Leadership without easy answers (Heifetz, 1994)
Leadership = Conviction in Action We have to know what matters and pursue the adaptive challenge

Flow… Csikszentmihalyi • Flow involves living one’s dream or conviction, not as an act of will but as a yearning to participate with others in achieving peak performance. • Flow is present when there are; clear goals & unambiguous feedback, balance between opportunities and ability to act, merging of action and awareness, focus on the present, loss of self-consciousness, distortion of time and space.
Flow and Performance High ability + High Challenge = Flow Arousal Anxiety Flow Worry Control Challenges Low--------------------------- High Apathy Relaxation Boredom Low ----------------------------------------High Skills
Oscillation… Schwartz • Oscillation is described in Schwartz’ “Making of a corporate Athlete” as a conditioning must. It calls for oscillation between periods of action and reflection (similar to Palmer’s ideas in the Active Life, 1990). • Highly intense and productive periods are possible, punctuated by periods of withdrawal for reflection and refocus.
