Lifestyle Friends Family What stops people from participating in sport? • Sport is available to everybody. • Sports clubs and leisure facilities go to great lengths to ensure that they meet everyone’s needs. • Local authorities and the government spend thousands of pounds on campaigns to increase participation in sport. • So why, in April 2011, were approximately only 16% of people (aged 16 and over) in the UK participating in sport or active recreation for at least 30 minutes 3 days a week?

  4. Swimming is the UK’s most popular sport in terms of adult participants. What determines the popularity of a sport? Between October 2008 and April 2011 swimming has seen a decline of over 200,000 participants, yet table tennis has seen an increase of nearly 40,000.

  5. What determines the popularity of a sport? Other traditionally popular sports such as football, golf, tennis and rugby are also showing decreases in participation … … yet participation in mountaineering and canoeing is on the rise. Why could this be?

  6. Is it cost? Is it time? Is it the weather? Is it the media?

  8. Pierre de Coubertin said “The most important thing is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” As well as keeping fit and healthy, participation in sport can teach us valuable lessons which can be transferred and used in a number of situations throughout the rest of our lives…… What else can sport teach us?

  9. …..however, for some, the desire to win sometimes takes over and can lead us into doing things we would never normally dream of. How far should we go to win?

  10. Learning Outcome 3 Understand the importance of hosting major sporting events

  11. Is it the amount of money that’s been spent on it? Is it the popularity of the athletes involved? What makes a sporting event major? • Why do countries and cities spend so much time, money and effort in trying to organise and hold a major sporting event? • Is it worth it? • Is it the location in which it takes place? What is a major sporting event and why do people want to hold them?

  12. Learning Outcome 4 Know about the role of national governing bodies in sport

  13. Quick questions…? Who trains officials? Who provides guidance, support and insurance to their members? Where did your coaching certificate come from? Who organises national tournaments? Who promotes etiquette and fair play? Answer: National Governing Bodies
