  2. THE ECONOMY – OUR NUMBER 1 PRIORITY • Key Priorities: • Supporting Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire’s economy through tough economic times by encouraging and attracting business growth and investment • Improving and diversifying local skills and developing high level skills • Developing vibrant and sustainable town centres, market towns and rural communities • Providing regulatory services that support the business community

  3. THE CHALLENGE WE FACE! • Historic reliance on mining, ceramics, metal workings, food and drink • Industrial structure relatively weak - West Midlands, one of the lowest economic growth rates in the UK - Stoke-on-Trent slowest in region, second slowest in England between 1995 - 2005 - GVA per head fallen from 2% above to 12% below region - Almost 21,000 private sector jobs lost, just 4,000 created between 1998 – 2008 - Significant reliance on public sector jobs in Stafford and Stoke • Skills - Gaps in technical and softer skills - Lack of small business skills • Impact of Recession - One of the worst affected regions - Fragile economic recovery in North Staffordshire, Cannock and Tamworth

  4. THE OPPORTUNITY • Centre of the Country - Excellent motorway, trunk roads connections and 3 international airports • Innovative approach to the development of technology based business capacity linked to our two Universities • Star innovative private sector “brands” and notable success stories • Strong manufacturing base to develop “low carbon” economy • Established strengths in ceramics, creative and cultural industries and tourism etc. • LA role in enabling and making the local connections that make a difference.
