  1. A New Superintendent’s Effort to Manage the 2008-2009 Budget An Experiment Using Social Media – Blogging Joel Shawn Superintendent, Arcadia USD

  2. What did I learn and what benefit was gained? • Social Media Are • Time • Communication – Power – Danger • Access to Me • Access to the Community

  3. Surprises • Civil Conversation • Managing the Dialogue • This year’s efforts:

  4. Norms for 2009-2010: • Any posting the includes vulgar language will be removed, • Any posting that name an individual (other than me) will be removed – the BLOG is not intended to be a place to make complaints (or praises) about specific individuals or programs. We have specific processes and protocols for handling complaints (our district and uniform complaint process). • Postings should be related to the school district, education in general, or state and federal policies that affect education.

  5. What was most difficult? • Time • Staying open (and non-defensive) to feedback: • It gets personal • Have faith in the community • Complexity

  6. It gets personal: • Nice wrote (on March 16th, 2009 9:09pm): • It is ironic to see how enthusiastic some parents are willing to make personal sacrifices by donating money to help these pink-slip teachers, but I see no initiative from the superintendent to do likewise with his own salary. Personally, I don't mind contributing money to help the pink-slip teachers. Our children are our future, but it appears our superintendent is more interested in preserving his huge salary than offer any personal sacrifices. In the news this week, Obama berated AIG for distributing millions of dollars worth of bonus money to executives despite receiving billions in US government bail out money. What would Obama do (WWOD) if he were to get wind about how our superintendent rather cut teacher jobs than to first consider a personal pay cut? Mr. Shawn, if you are an Obama supporter, then you need to do the right thing.

  7. Trust the community: • pink slip teacher wrote (on March 16th, 2009 9:27pm): • I am one of the 66 teachers who received a pink slip last week. Though I truly appreciate the support expressed on this blog, I feel compelled to respond to the calls for Dr. Shawn to take a salary cut. First of all, he doesn't make enough money that a cut in his salary would make any appreciable dent in the budget gap. While such a symbolic measure on his part might spur generosity in others, he is not gaining any personal benefit from the current financial crisis, nor can he single handedly save a single teacher's job. He, like the rest of us, is doing the best he can in a bad situation and his responsiveness and availability are to be lauded. Yes, I want to keep my job - I love working in Arcadia, in no small part because people like Dr. Shawn work so hard to keep us moving forward, offering unparalleled support to help us all achieve more.

  8. Trust the community: • concerned parent wrote (on March 16th, 2009 11:28pm): • The criticism of Dr. Shawn is totally uncalled for. I have never heard or seen him write anything about what he may or may not do with his own compensation, yet it seems members of this community are ready to sacrifice him for their own rhetoric and agenda. Comparing AUSD admins to AIG - give me a break! This is time for the community to come together and support the district - meaning the students, teachers, and administration. Please don't make any misleading or defamatory statements on this forum. Dr. Shawn is already sticking his neck out to reach to the community. Unjustified attacks against him is counterproductive and downright harmful to the community spirit AUSD is all about.

  9. Advice • Time and Calendar • Know yourself and your staff • Work to make sure the information you post is as accurate and good as it can be • Perfection is not the standard – precision is
