  2. Understanding Goal: Change requires action. • Investigative Question:How can the pen or persuasive writing be an agent of change?

  3. What are the attributes of effective persuasive writing? What is E.B. Henderson’s connection and how did he use his writing to make change?

  4. Directions • Find a partner and select a red, green,orblue, folder. (one per pair) • Use the SCIM-C graphic organizer, located inside the folder to carefully read and reflect on the letter of E. B. Henderson • After reading and reflecting (SCIM), use the additional documents to do the C or corroboration portion. • Reflect: How did E.B. Henderson strive to make change?

  5. Index Card Annotation • On an index card, jot down words, phrases, or other evidence from your E.B. Henderson letter, that demonstrates effective persuasive writing. • Share common attributes of persuasive writing. • How powerful was his pen?

  6. Writing Letters to the Editor • Remember Purpose: To argue for or against, make a request, promote an organization, or cause the reader to act in some fashion • Remember Style: Use a quote, anecdote, statistics, or pose a question, and state a thesis at the onset. This should be followed by elaboration, clarification, comparisons, or an analogy in the body. Conclude with a summarization of your thesis, a recommendation, prediction, or personal comment at the end. • Strive for: Facts to Support Opinions, Clear Vivid Language, and Imagery.
