  3. Mitacs program goals • Support flexible, collaborative research projects • Attract new funding • Maintain high-quality research • Support all disciplines • Support international research collaborations in Canada and abroad • Train graduates and postdocs for their careers • Industry

  4. Accelerate Mitacs’ premiere internship program designed to build collaborations between industry and academia

Accelerate • Program supports collaborative research projects with industry or eligible non-profit partners in Canada or abroad • Open to graduate students and postdocs • Open to all disciplines • Partner is required to contribute cash for the project • Funding starts at $15,000 • Internship length starts at 4 months • Interns gain industry/community experience • Non-competitive (over 97% success rate)

Funding Standard funding model: One Internship Unit • Overall project length and scope collaboratively defined by academics and partner • 1 internship unit: 4 month research project • Intern’s time is split ~50/50 between partner and university (min 25%, max 75%) • Flexible funding options including min $5,000 or max $10,000 match per internship unit $7,500 Partner $7,500 Mitacs $15,000 Over 4-6 months $10,000 minimum intern stipend $5,000 other project-related expenses

  7. Eligible Partners • Must have physical location (not solely virtual) • Partners can include: • For-profit and crown corporations • Domestic or foreign-owned • Utility providers, NGOs • Eligible not-for-profits • International: for-profit partners in any Mitacs partner countries

  8. Accelerate – Flexible Program • Multiple companies and/or universities/colleges are possible on one application • Focus of work at both sites is on joint project • Projects can be a mix of domestic and International Accelerate • Project application can be prepared in advance of student arrival (TBD) • Timeline from submission to start date: • Domestic ~6-8 weeks • International component of project ~16 weeks • Start dates can be pushed up to 1 year

Accelerate - Other opportunities • Masters and PhD Fellowships • Similar to standard Accelerate but supports longer term projects • Masters: 2 years funding • PhD: 4 years funding • Entrepreneurship Pilot • Similar to standard Accelerate but supports graduate student or postdoc-owned companies

  10. Elevate A competitive postdoctoral fellowship program, designed to build industry-ready scientists

Elevate - Creating research leaders • Two-year fellowship for postdoctoral fellows that includes research management training • Supports research collaborations between academia and partners • Open to all disciplines • Competitive applications • Two calls a year, winter and spring Next call will open in May

Elevate • Fellows time is split ~50/50 between company and university (min 25%, max 75%) • Partner must be located in the same province • Fellows must be less than 5 years from completion of PhD • Can combine 1-3 internship units of Accelerate funding beforethe start of the Elevate fellowship Winter Call Call opens: November Proposal due: February Results announced: June Project start by: September Spring Call Call opens: May Proposal due: July Results announced: November Project start by: February

Globalink Research Award - Outbound • 3-6 month research project at a university abroad • Open to senior undergrads, graduate students and postdocs • $6,000 award (covers travel, accommodation, stipend etc) • Jointly supervised by Canadian and international supervisors • No deadline, non-competitive (very high success rates!) • Submit applications 16 weeks prior to expected travel

Globalink Research Award - Inbound • Open to senior undergrads, graduate students and postdocs from Mitacs partner countries • Supports a 3-6 month research project at Ryerson in collaboration with an international university • $6,000 award • $3,000 from PI (or the visitor’s home institution or other source) • $3,000 from Mitacs • Jointly supervised by Canadian and international supervisors • No deadline, non-competitive (very high success rates!) • Submit applications 16 weeks prior to expected travel
