  2. As of February 1, 2008 the U.S. owes the UN $2.77 Billion* • Most of this debt is for prior year, unpaid bills, which the U.S. has no plans to pay. • Some of this debt is for current year bills. The U.S. typically pays current year UN bills one year late. But by this time, new bills have already come in. This means that the U.S. is always more than $2.5 billion behind on its UN payments. • Shortfalls in the proposed FY 2009 budget will add another $610 million to the US permanent debt to the UN. * Assessments for CIPA and CIO accounts.

  4. Debts of 66 States to the UN Regular Budget As of November 1, 2007 For the first time in a decade, the U.S. has hard arrears in the UN regular budget. These are debts that cannot be glossed over with “late payment” status.

Unpaid Peacekeeping AssessmentsAs of November 1, 2007 • As the UN takes on important new peacekeeping missions, the costs rise. • Without full financial support, these missions become more difficult and dangerous. • The U.S. explicitly approves every UN Peacekeeping mission. • Japan has taken steps to pay $775 Million toward its unpaid peacekeeping dues. • This will further increase the U.S. share of UN peacekeeping debt.
