  1. Kingdom Animalia The Invertebrates (95%) Whip Coral Sunflower Starfish Blue Morpho (Costa Rica) Scorpion Earthworm Oyster

  2. Kingdom Animalia The Vertebrates (Phylum: Chordata) (5%)

  3. Kingdom Animalia Animals share some common characteristics: • Multicellular • Eukaryotic • Heterotrophic • Have cell specialization • Lack cell walls • Glucose stored as glycogen for energy • Sexual (most) and/or asexual reproduction (few)

  4. Label and color the cell vacuole

  5. Cellmembrane Flagellum Mitochondrion Microtubules Ribosomes Cytoplasm Nucleus Lysosome Nucleolus Golgi body Nuclear membrane Nucleoplasm Smooth ER Rough ER Vacuole

  6. Nucleus • Control Center • Contains nearly all DNA – instructions for making proteins and other important molecules • Key processes: Controls metabolism of cell

  7. Endoplasmic Reticulum • Transportation (main function) • Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER) • Covered in ribosomes (rough) • Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER) • Synthesis (make) of membrane lipids • Contain enzymes for detoxification of drugs – Liver has lots of SER’s Notice how the E.R. is attached to the nucleus …. Like the ‘hallways’

  8. Smooth and Rough ER Key process: Transportation of molecules

  9. Golgi Apparatus • Packaging Center • Modify, sort, and package proteins and other materials from the endoplasmic reticulum for storage or secretion.

  10. Mitochondria Key process: Cellular respiration C6H12O6 + O2 H2O +CO2 + ATP • Power House Breaks down glucose in the presence of oxygen to form ATP

  11. Lysosome • Waste Management of cell • Have enzymes that are used to break down old organelles; helps with digestion in cell.

  12. Cell boundaries aka cell membrane • Cell membrane regulates what enters/leaves the cell, • Helps with osmosis.

  13. Microtubules • Cell Framework • A network of protein filaments that helps the cell to maintain its shape

  14. Ribosomes! Protein Factory Make proteins for the cell

  15. Centrioles Plays a role during cell division. Assist in the making of cilia and flagella.

  16. Vacuoles • Storage Facility • Animal cells many small vacuoles. • Store materials like water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates

  17. Complete Notes on Animal characteristics Use textbook pp. 696-698
