3 Basics for Success Be Prepared for the Rehearsal Be On Time Participate Fully in the Rehearsal
Materials For The Classroom • Your music folder • A pencil (Do not EVER write in pen on your music) • Bottled water is ok – soda, coffee, tea, flavored water, etc. is not ok
Procedure for Entering Classroom • Finish conversations and food outside before entering. • Place all personal items against the wall. • Take your music, pencil and bottle of water to your seat. • When the bell rings, stand and prepare to sing.
Other Procedures • If you are late to class you must sign the tardy book on top of the piano. • Only one person at a time may use the restroom. If the pass is gone you must wait. • No bathroom passes the last 10 minutes of class. • If I see or hear your phone or other electronic device, I will take it.
Class Procedures • Vocal Preparation (teacher and student led) • Announcements/Attendance • Musicianship Skills (reading, writing, singing) • Music Rehearsal (song selection will be on the white board when you come in each day)
Grading Procedure • Class Rehearsal Basics/Effort/Attitude • Daily Attendance • Extra Rehearsal Attendance • Concert Attendance • Festival Participation • Written/Skills Evaluations Your grade is based on a standard percentage (90%, 80%, etc.) Rubrics
Procedure for Excused Absences • Absences from concerts will only be excused through written notification from a parent or guardian. • This must be done before the performance. • In the case of sudden illness or family emergency, written notice may be given to the director the day the student returns to class.
Make-Up Work • Students who have an excused absence from a required performance or rehearsal will be given make-up work. • All make-up work must be completed before the end of the grading period. • Unexcused absences will be recorded as a “0” with no opportunity for make-up work.
Eligibility Policy • Students must be passing all of their classes (NO F’s) and have a GPA of 2.0 or higher in order to be considered “eligible”. • This class will follow the same guidelines for eligibility as does the athletics department.
In addition, it will be the policy of the BMHS Choral Union for students who are ineligible to NOT be allowed to participate in ANY choral activity that takes place during the school day. • There will be NO EXCEPTIONS made for the ineligibility policy.
Activities Requiring Eligibility • All Festivals (ACE, AzCDA, Regional, All-State, Deer Valley Invitational, Men’s Festival, etc.) • Auditions for Regional and All-State Honor Choirs • Off Campus performances ocuring during the school day
Activities Required for a Grade • Fall Choir Concert (Oct. 3) • Winter Holiday Concert (Dec. 5) • Student Showcase (Feb. 27) • “POPS” (May 1 and 2) • All extra rehearsals called before or after school (i.e. WC combined rehearsals)
Choral Curriculum • We will focus on developing your voice as a musical instrument. • You will learn to read and write music through the use of solfege and other techniques. • Together, we will explore musical expression by learning to apply our understanding of symbols, genres, composers, and text.
Choral Curriculum (continued) • You will gain experience singing in a variety of languages including but not limited to English, Spanish, Latin, French, German and Italian. • As an ensemble, we will gain experience and confidence as a performing group. We will learn to sing together in unison and in harmony, blending our voices to create quality music. We will demonstrate professionalism in our performances and support each other in our work.
