Octavos • An individual piece of choral music is called an octavo
Staff • A staff is the 5 lines and 4 spaces music on which music is written
System • A system is a set of staves, connected by a long bar line, which are all performed at the same time
Review • How many staves are on this page? • How many systems are on this page?
Piano • The piano part is written on a Grand Staff, which consists of two staves (treble and bass clef), connected by a bar line and a brace. • It always appears below the voice parts Treble Clef Brace Bass Clef Bar line
Two-Part Music • Two part music may be 2-part, SA, or TB • If the parts are written on the same line of music, pay attention to the stem directions.
Two-Part Music • The higher part (S, T, or Part I) will always have stems pointing up • The lower part (A, B, or Part II) stems will point down. The Soprano part sings the melody here. The lyrics are written above the part. The Alto part sings the melody here. The lyrics are written below the part.
Two-Part Music • If a two part octavo has a separate line for each part, the higher part (S, T, or Part I) is always on top. • The lyrics are written below the staff if there are different words. • If both parts have the same lyrics, they are written between the staves. Part I Part II Piano
Two-Part Music Part II • When you are reading your part, remember to move from system to system, not staff to staff. Part II Part II
Two-Part Review • What is a system? • What is a staff? • Which part is on the top staff? • Which part is on the middle staff? • Which part is on the bottom two staves?
