Syllable-timed vs. Stress-timed • A syllable-timed language – Spanish, French • syllables take approximately equal amounts of time to pronounce • A Stressed-timed language – English, German - syllables are said at approximately regular intervals and the length it takes to say something depends on the number of stressed syllables rather than the number of syllables itself. • Unstressed syllables shorten to fit this rhythm.
Sentence stress • In any sentence in English there are words that carry stress and others that don’t. Stressed words carry the meaning of the sentence, and for this reason they are called “Content Words”. • The content words are usually nouns and verbs , but sometimes, for dramatic effect, you can stress pronouns and conjunctions.
Task – Film Speeches Choose one of the film speeches ( you will given a paper copy) • Mark pauses – short pauses like this I indicating commas and long pauses II indicating a full stop • Mark the words that you are going to stress • Highlight words you want to project ( shout) or whisper Try reading the speech to your partner Finally listen to the speeches by actors.
