  2. Monday Openings • Active and Passive Voice – • Active Voice occurs when the subject performs the action. In Passive Voice, the subject of the sentence is acted on by another agent. • Example • Passive: Snuffles was taken to the vet by my mom. • Active: My mom took Snuffles to the vet. • Rewrite in Active Voice • Chrissy’s dress for the dance was chosen by her mom.

  3. Monday • Learning Targets: • I will self-assess my strengths and weaknesses from the Pre-Test. • I will write a suitable Thesis for the Topic • Go over Pre-test – complete self-assessment • Hand out and Go over Unit 1: Lesson 1 • Discuss Thesis and Outline for upcoming Paper

  4. Pre-Test • For the items you scored correct, look for patterns of concepts you understand. • Example: I recognize most fragments and am able to correct them. • For the items you missed, look for patterns of concepts you need to focus on. • Example: I missed the commas with conjunctions and non-essential elements.

  5. Grammar: Unit 1, Lesson 1 • Unit 1: Review of correct sentences, commas, semi-colons, colons, apostrophes, and quotation marks. • Unit 1 • Fragments – note how to correct. • Run-ons and Comma Splices – fix in similar manner

  6. Thesis • Thesis will be centered around a specific career, internship, apprenticeship, military program, or college goal. • Part of the thesis needs to identify why this is a viable option for you – • Why you think you would be good at this • What experiences you have had that make you settle on this particular choice.

Thesis • Not a thesis • Sam, Steve, and my mom. • Everything influenced my choice of career • I plan to go to college at MCC; then I will transfer to GVSU. • Will work as a thesis • My love of the outdoors and my family have influenced me to pursue a career as a conversation officer. • From my experiences in CTC and my family members who already work in construction, I have decided I want to study to be an engineer.

You may write an original sentence for each or you work more than one word into a sentence. You will be working some of these into your Personal Narrative, so try to think about how you could apply these to yourself. • Accountable – adjective – responsible, answerable for one’s actions • Adroit –adjective – clever or skillful, dexterous • Arduous – adjective – involving or requiring strenuous effort • Certify – verb – to confirm formally, verify • Endure – verb – to carry on through despite hardships, to cope with difficult situations/conditions • Fortuitous – adjective – occurring by a happy accident or chance, fortunate • Proficient – adjective – competent in doing or using something, skillful • Vocation – noun – calling, profession, a career one feels strongly about pursuing

  11. Learning target: I will compose a conclusion that closes my essay well. • Check Lesson 2 • Discuss Lesson 3 • Explain and model conclusions • Finish Body paragraphs and Work on Conclusions • Review notes on Introduction and email about introduction. Begin revision.

  12. Learning target: I will compose a conclusion that closes my essay well. • Complete Lesson 3 • If not finished with body paragraphs and conclusion – do so tonight. Also, review notes on Introduction. • Tomorrow, you need to revise introduction and finalize narrative and submit to Turnitin.

You will be working some of these into your Personal Narrative, so try to think about how you could apply these to yourself. • Affinity – noun – a innate liking for someone or something • Aptitude – noun – a natural ability to do something • Aspire – verb – direct one’s hopes towards doing/achieveing something • Enhance – verb – improve the quality or value of • Forthright – adjective – direct, straightforward, candid • Plethora – noun – a great amount, an excess of • Tenacious – adjective – persistent, not letting go of or giving up easily
