  3. Late 1920sChinese Communists and Nationalists begin the struggle for government control • Mid-1940s—U.S. sent Chiang Kai-shek, the Nationalist leader, $2 billion to prevent communist takeover • 1949—Communists capture control of capital of Beijing

  4. Aug. 1949—U.S. discontinues aid to Nationalists who flee to Taiwan • Oct. 1949—People’s Republic of China established by Mao Zedong (communist)

  5. In September 1949 Truman announced that the Soviet Union had detonated an atomic bomb. This was a shock to the nation.
