Chairman Mao Zedong • Born to a peasant Family • Lead the CCP army to defeat the Nationalist party and took over China. • Established the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949.
The Great Leap Forward • Effort to increase farm and industrial output. • Created communes • Huge failure. • Food shortages everywhere. • Over 55 million Chinese people died. “Destroy the old world; Forge the new world.“
What was The Great Leap forward suppose to do? 1. privatize capital investment 2. have religious tolerance 3. give individual ownership of land 4. increase industrial productivity
Failure of Great Leap Forward • Because of Chairmen Mao’s failure in the Great Leap Forward • He lost economic power within the Communist power. • Rivals were starting to oppose Chairmen Mao.

The Red Guard • Young students who aligned themselves with Chairmen Mao • Extreme believers of anything that Mao had said. • “Little Red Book”- was a book of quotes from Mao
The Red Guard • Was the army for Mao • Destroyed churches and temples. • Attacked teachers and other intellectuals. • Weeded out any non-believers of Chairmen Mao.
Why the Cultural Revolution? • Destroying the four olds. • Old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits. • These “four olds” interfered with the creation of a modern socialist society.
Impact on the Young • Cultural Revolution values were taught in schools. • Graduates sent to the countryside for manual labor. • Mao said; "It is necessary for intellectual students to go the countryside and be re-educated by poor or average peasants."
Impact on the Economy • Decrease in food, clothing and housing production • Confusion from the Government.
Was it worth it? • 30 million people died during the cultural revolution • Freedoms of the Chinese people were lost. • Education completely halted. • Widespread economic failure. • Cultural Revolution never truly ended until Chairmen Mao’s Death in 1976.
