BRIEF BACKGROUND • Belem de Sao Francisco: NE Brazil • Main Jobs: Farmers, Mechanics • Young Children OFTEN forced to work on farms • Children lack sense of hope to become anything but farmers • OUR GOAL: • Accessible Resources, Community / Pride / Accomplishment, Creative Design Process
BRIEF BACKGROUND • Brazilian Gov’t Plan to Eradicate child labor • Pay families ~$8/yr, kids to school/PETI centers • Young program—2 yrs running • Success depends on PETI centers… • BUT the centers have no resources! • PETI Centers • ~60 kids/center, ages 6-15 • 17 centers total • OUR GOAL: • Accessible Resources, Community / Pride / Accomplishment, Creative Design Process
PROBLEM DEFINITION • Community contact: FIA • Says kids need something to give them: • Sense of Community • Feeling of Accomplishment • Something to take Pride in • Prominent Achievement • Our addition: • Lack of creative outlet, design cultivation • Lack of hope for future • Very limited funds and resources • Child appropriate, safe
SOLUTION APPROACH • CLUBHOUSES and PLAY AREAS • PROBLEMS: • Lack Sense of Community • Lack Accomplishment • Need Thing to Take Pride in • Need Prominent Success • Lack of creative outlet, design cultivation • Lack of hope for future • Very limited funds and resources • Child appropriate, safe • OUR APPROACH • Community built, for all • From model to real • To be used, maintained • Displayed outside, large • Teach design, allow creativity in own design • Acquire new skills • Use resources available (wood, tires/inner tubes) • Materials, tools, guidelines
SOLUTION APPROACH • 5 steps, 1 year • We create Handbook • Kids learn to build model domes and tire structures • Kids create unique clubhouses / play areas • Model Real calculations • Community comes together to build, with kids • Future… • Creativity / Design continues with clubs, toys • Implementation at other PETI centeres

THE HANDBOOK: SAFETY • CONSTRUCTION • Non-steel belted tires • Tire inner tubes long enough • Balance of sun and shade. • Poke small holes in tires for water drainage • Areas for older members to sit • Testing of joints
THE HANDBOOK: SAFETY • SAFETY STANDARDS • Heights – 4-6 ft off ground • Surface - proper impact absorbing material (i.e. sand, sawdust, shredded tires) • Distance between equipment (fall zones)-6 ft • Entrapment - no openings less than 3.50 inches or larger than 11 inches

BUILDING COMMUNITY • Our process allows the kids to be involved from start to finish • Kids own the product • Heavy Community involvement: • Fia, teacher at PETI center, to supervise • College Students from UniVale to help implement…July & Dec. • Community members in Belem de Sao Francisco (parents, mentors)
1 1 1 5 ERADICATION OF CHILD LABOR • Very Important Issue • If PETI centers are not successful, the kids will have to go back to work • Our project is designed to encourage the creative design development process in these kids... And give them hope for the future.
