Take a wild guess. Which city had the honor of becoming Ohio’s first Capitol? Cincinnati Cleveland Columbus Zanesville Chillicothe
The capital of the Ohio Territory was located at Chillicothe (Ross County). In 1802, the framers of the original Ohio Constitution met in Chillicothe. In 1803 when Ohio became a state, Chillicothe became the site of the first capital. • Chillicothe, Ohio
In 1809, for political reasons, the capital was removed to Zanesville (Muskingum County). • Zanesville, Oh
In 1812, it was decided that the capital should be located in central Ohio within 40 miles of the center of the state. The search began for a new capital. Many cities in central Ohio competed for the honor of having the capital move to their city. No city won the competition.
Rather, a wilderness area on the “high bank of the Scioto River,” opposite Franklinton at a town to be known as Columbus was chosen. While the wilderness was cleared, platted, and the new brick capitol was constructed, the capital was removed back to Chillicothe.
In 1816, the state officials occupied the new capitol building and state office building, located on the southwest corner of the present Statehouse Square in Columbus. The state business was conducted in that building until 1857 when it burned to the ground. • Columbus, Oh
