  2. Current Activities / Issues • Five-year review of NOAA Partnership Policy by NOAA Science Advisory Board (Environmental Information Services Working Group) • Community interest in future of climate services • NWS attention to dissemination, including yesterday’s session on wireless (more below) • Note: Partnership Policy applies to content AND methods of delivery • Expectation of growing diversity in observing systems, e.g. National Network of Networks 6/24/2011

  3. NWS Forum on Wireless Weather Services • Held June 28, 2011 • Goal • Engage weather enterprise (government, private sector, academia) and core partners (e.g., emergency managers) in discussions on how best to provide wireless environmental information services. • Solicit feedback on most appropriate role for NWS in providing wireless weather services. • Not a “decision meeting” 6/24/2011

  4. NWS Forum on Wireless Weather Services • Discussion areas • 1: How can the weather enterprise (government, private sector, academia) best serve the needs of NWS core partners? • 2: How can the weather enterprise best serve the needs of general public/national economy? • 3: What do service providers need from NWS to support development of comprehensive wireless weather services? 6/24/2011

  5. Summary Issues/Conclusions • Standardization of NWS data/products is critical • Combination of (1) IPAWS/CMAS for government-sponsored weather alerts to general public and (2) mobile weather services available from commercial providers is a powerful combination in meeting the needs of the general public 6/24/2011

  6. Summary Issues/Conclusions • There is general recognition that NWS does have a special interest in serving “core partners,” however – • More clarity regarding NWS definition of “core partner” is needed • NWS commitment to meet needs of core partners is understood, but should recognize that core partners also use commercially available services 6/24/2011

  7. Summary Issues/Conclusions • Issues relating to assuring the quality of mobile weather services • Guaranteed delivery of alerts • Establishing qualifications of suppliers and identifying qualified suppliers • Emerging issues • Patents • Weather information to automobiles vs. distracted driving 6/24/2011
