Wednesday, April 25th A.P. English Language
Today’s Assignment • Once you have completed annotating the speech from Florence Kelley, you are to develop two (2) outlines for your essay response: • One outline will be in the format of identifying specific rhetorical devices (i.e. 1st body paragraph of my essay discusses her ability to gain the audience’s agreement through the use of “we” and “our”) • One outline will be in the format of chunking
Chunking, you say? • Chunking refers to splitting the speech into three distinct parts, and then discussing each part in your body paragraphs (what is the author’s message, and how does she convey it?) • To chunk, you must first look for specific shifts between paragraphs. Do you find any shifts in subject (general to specific), in tense (past to present to future), in mood (angry to conciliatory to pleading)?
Chunking, you say? • Once you have identified the shifts, you can now start developing your outline. • For example, if I decide that a shift occurs between the third and fourth paragraphs, then my first body paragraph of my essay will be concerned with what Kelley’s message is in the first three paragraphs, and how she conveys it to me.
Chunking, you say? Thesis: In her speech to suffragists in 1905, Florence Kelley imparts an inescapable message of a nation’s responsibility for the despicable practices of child labor. Body Paragraph 1 (first three paragraphs of speech): Author’s message: Children, especially females, are the main victims in a crime against humanity that is perpetrated by all Americans. Evidence: Use of “we” to emphasize that everyone is to blame; use of inflammatory diction (coal-breakers, enlightened, little girls, deafening); use of specific facts/statistics (2nd paragraph) to establish credibility while, at the same time, establishing one of her main appeals to her audience (who are clearly vested in obtaining more rights for women)
Chunking Outline Thesis: Body paragraph 1: (what parts of the essay are covered in this paragraph?) Author’s message: (what message is the author conveying in these specific paragraphs?) Evidence: (what types of language does the author employ in these specific paragraphs that tells you her message?) FOR EACH OF YOUR ESSAY’S BODY PARAGRAPHS, THIS SHOULD BE THE FORMAT OF YOUR OUTLINE (WHAT PARTS ARE COVERED/WHAT MESSAGE IS CONVEYED/WHAT EVIDENCE DO YOU SEE)
