Introduction • Peritoneal cancer is a rare form of cancer that develops in the peritoneum, a thin, delicate tissue lining the abdominal cavity. • The peritoneum plays a crucial role in supporting and protecting abdominal organs. • This cancer type can arise from the peritoneum itself or can spread to the peritoneum from other organs, known as secondary or metastatic peritoneal cancer.

Causes and Risk Factors Causes: Risk Factors: • Previous cancers: Individuals with a history of ovarian, colorectal, or gastric cancers are at higher risk. • Genetic predisposition: Certain genetic syndromes like Lynch syndrome or familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) can increase susceptibility. The exact cause of peritoneal cancer is not fully understood, but it's believed to be linked to genetic mutations or abnormalities in the peritoneal cells.

  4. Symptoms • Early stages of peritoneal cancer may not exhibit noticeable symptoms. • As the disease progresses, common symptoms may include: • Abdominal pain or swelling • Changes in bowel habits • Unexplained weight loss • Nausea and vomiting • Fatigue or weakness

Diagnosis • Physical Examination: Doctors may perform a physical exam to check for abdominal swelling or lumps. • Imaging Tests: CT scans, MRIs, or ultrasounds help visualize the peritoneum and surrounding organs. • Biopsy: Extracting a tissue sample for examination is crucial to confirm the presence of cancer cells.

  6. Treatment Options • Surgery: Often the primary treatment, aiming to remove cancerous tissues. This may involve debulking surgery or cytoreductive surgery with heated chemotherapy (HIPEC). • Chemotherapy: Administered before or after surgery to target cancer cells. • Targeted Therapy: Drugs that specifically target certain mutations in cancer cells.
