  3. WHAT IS ESOPHAGEAL CANCER? Esophageal cancer is cancer that occurs in the esophagus. Esophageal cancer is a long hollow tube that extends from the throat to the stomach. The esophagus helps to transfer the swallowed food from the back of the throat to the stomach for digestion. Esophageal cancer usually starts in cells inside the esophagus. Squamous cells are flat thin cells that line the surface of the esophagus. Squamous cell carcinoma most commonly occurs in the upper and middle parts of the esophagus. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common esophageal cancer in the world. Note : Other rare types. Some rare forms of esophageal cancer include small cell carcinoma, sarcoma, lymphoma, melanoma, and choriocarcinoma.
