  2. EMu Slice Test Summer • July 11 – 15: Summer Workshop Topics • Peripheral Crate timing (SX5) • significant progress on trigger timing • external trigger: scintillator • Production DDU/DCC (Counting House) • Fiber input from Slice Test (Periph. Crate’s DMBs) • S-Link output to FRL (Global DAQ) • New VME Crate Controller (B904) • tested at 904 • continued software development at Rice EMu Slice Test Status -- FG

  3. EMu Slice Test Organization • Important increase in manpower for the Slice Test efforts • Jinghua Liu (Rice) and Martin vd Mey (FNAL) • EMu Workshops • next one Sept. 12 – 16 (before CMS week) • Bi-weekly VRVS meetings • Reorganization of online software • prepare for XDAQ v3 migration • separation of Core and Application software • relevant step to code reuse and B904 test suites • new repository for online analysis software • e.g., analysis and calibration utilities EMu Slice Test Status -- FG

  4. Peripheral Crate Triggers • external: scintillator-coincidence trigger • TTC and add’l trigger electronics at YE+2 • ~80x80 cm2 overlap with ME+2/3/31 (and ME+3/3/31 on the other side of YE+2) • in principle, only target chambers will show L1a-LCT correlations … • … BUT, since the timing procedures essentially work on a full crate (by pulsing the on-chamber electronics), the other chambers should be timed in as well. • in principle, one L1a-offset per crate. • in practice, still many parameters involved • important spin-off for the B904 Peripheral Crate Commissioning EMu Slice Test Status -- FG

  5. Peripheral Crate Triggers (cont’d) • self-trigger: based on TrackFinder L1request • involves all chambers • [TMBs →MPC] → [SP→CCB] → TTC → [CCB/TMBs/DMBs] • exercise EMu system with large latencies • 180m fiber between Peripheral and TF crates • 180m fiber back from TTC to Peripheral Crate • approx. 34 extra BXs compared to final CMS, partially accommodated in (temporary) firmware updates • peripheral crate is completely timed in • except for CFEB readout throughout the whole crate, which awaits a last firmware updated (DMB). EMu Slice Test Status -- FG

  6. EMu Slice Test Summer Summary • Slice Test workshops have been very useful • will continue to use this format at least until the Cosmic Challenge • Externally and self-triggered set-ups • for both cases chambers were timed in • unfortunately, both cannot coexist at the same TTC • Timing procedures significantly improved • various new aspects discovered and solved • different from Beam Tests • software and documentation in a good shape • ready to be automated EMu Slice Test Status -- FG

  7. EMu Slice Test: Fall ‘05 • Major topics for upcoming workshop: • 2nd peripheral crate based on final design: CRB, cooling, new backplane • New TMB and RAT modules • Introduce a 2nd MPC for further trigger studies • Reintroduce the new VME CC, production FED electronics in the slice test set-up • Divide ME2 and ME3 chambers up between the two peripheral crates • hook up more chambers • Continue software reorganization/modifications • core and application frameworks • new hardware (TMB, crate controller, FED electronics) EMu Slice Test Status -- FG

  8. EMu system is highly configurable. Only one parameter fixed (in firmware): L1A-CFEB timing set to 2.9us (minimum), which is based on the 3.2us for CMS, by design only fixed reference point Scintillator and Beam Test trigger configurations have traditionally been very compact. adjusting latencies was always possible by adding external delays to the trigger signal TrackFinder trigger based SliceTest involves larger distances between the various electronics components Peripheral Crate at YE+2 disk TF trigger generation and TTC equipment in Counting House 180m fiber each way FED crate in Counting House another 180m Extra 34BXs in fiber path compared to CMS final fibers A careful measurement of the latencies showed that due to the substantial length of optical fibers L1A latency is 133BXs (3.3us). This ~5BXs more than CMS design, but more importantly substantially more than the initial 2.9us. Firmware changes to the DMB allow the fixed latency to be adjusted in increments of 400ns. Given the low cosmic rate no reason to worry about dead time due to SCA blocks not being released in time Note: these changes are SliceTest specific and have no consequences for final CMS the 2.9us was a fairly arbitrary but relevant number. It is likely to be changed for the final CMS the fiber lengths quoted on this page are EMu Slice Test specific and will change again once the EMu Slice Test integrates in the Magnet Test EMu Slice Test Latencies EMu Slice Test Status -- FG
