EMu Slice Test – Status & Plans Frank Geurts FNAL/Rice http://cern.ch/EmuSliceTest
Objectives • Hook-up CSCs to Peripheral Crates • use final electronics, as much as possible • revert to Beam-Test solutions whenever needed • Hook up Peripheral Crates to Trigger and DAQ • use TrackFinder for self-trigger • use EMu-FED and Central-DAQ • Establish and finalize procedures and software • timing and calibration procedures • test methods (shared with 904 crew) • software integration • Prepare towards the CMS Magnet Test • Cosmic Challenge with CMS-wide slice • can we deliver a 60° sector, i.e. 39 CSCs? F.Geurts -- EMu Slice Test
Spring Test Preparations “A journey of more than four hundred chambers starts with a first CSC” • Connect & Configure 6 CSCs on YE+2: • 3 ME+2 and 3 ME+3 chambers • HV + LV + gas • Self-trigger on cosmics • provide MPC data to TF • get trigger back from TTC • Provide S-Link data to Central-DAQ • and spy data to DQM • Concurrent CMS installation activities at SX5 • YE+ disk moves, cabling activities, electronics procurement • March Test pushed to early Spring F.Geurts -- EMu Slice Test

Current Status -3- • External Racks • “mini counting house” • Control & DAQ pc • remotely accessible • protected by UPS • Network power switch • allow remote power-cycling of Peripheral Crate • Pre-SpringTest location for pFED†, TF and TTC crates • awaiting rack allocation in counting house, • and fiber installation †pseudo = old DDU/CCB in peripheral mini-crate • TF crate • SBS-620 • SP • CCB’01 (spec.) • MS Rack -1- Rack -2- • TTC crate • CAEN v1718 • TTCvi • TTCvx • DAQ & Control • [emuslice01] • emuslice02 • UPS • pFED† crate • D360 • CCB’04 • DDU • FedKit F.Geurts -- EMu Slice Test
Current Status -4- • SX5: Provisional Wall removal completed • Effects from dust still unclear • see next slide • Final disk movement underway • Services (gas, LV, HV) need to be re-instated • EMu Slice Test interrupted until then • DCS integration • DIM additions to PeripheralCrate library • Successfully tested (see Valeri’s presentation) • TriDAS/emu integration • see next slide F.Geurts -- EMu Slice Test

Slice Test Software Organization • TriDAS/emu integration • Project/Package structure: emu/<package> • Standardized Makefile structures • Preparation for CMS integration (XDAQ v3) • One collection of all relevant EMU libraries: easier for XDAQ executives • PeripheralCrate first “package” • emuDCS, emuDAQ, emuDQM should follow • Sub-packages allowed • TriDAS/trigger/csctf similar efforts (Ildefons Magrans, et al.) • Uncovered nasty CVS administrative issue: make sure package names are unique throughout CVS structure. • New mailing list: EMU-SOFTWARE • Help coordinate various software efforts • Announce updates and releases F.Geurts -- EMu Slice Test
Spring Test Schedule • Spring Test: 2nd half of April • Fibers installed (see next slide) • FED electronics and experts available • Timing and trigger experts available (?) • Final YE+2 location • SX5 configuration up to swiveling (Alain Hervé): F.Geurts -- EMu Slice Test
Fiber Duct Installation & DAQ Room • We have asked Luit de Jong et al. to install fiber ducts for the Slice Test and Magnet Test • EMU Fibers • DAQ path = DMB-DDU + CrateController-Hub • TRG path = TTC-CCB + MPC-SP • all are multi-mode fibers with LC connectors • except for TTC-CCB: single-mode with ST connectors • From Slice Test towards Magnet Test: • 60° ME2,3 sector, i.e. 2 crates. • Patch panel will be on the YE+2 mini-rack (Trigger Sect.5) • test various patch connector options • Magnet Test • 60° ME1-4 sector, i.e. 5 crates • patch panel on YE+1 • Finalize requirements soon (i.e. during CMS week) F.Geurts -- EMu Slice Test
SX5 Fiber Path for CMS-EMu -1- • horizontal distances inside SX5 only • reconsider alcove by-passes • new end positions for Slice Test by-pass this alcove? 18m Counting House (see next page) 10m 10m 15m 49m YE+2 YE+2 YE+2 20m current position magnet test slice test F.Geurts -- EMu Slice Test

Short term plans • Chamber timing • use test tools • with (remote) help from TMB and DMB experts • CSC trigger: configure TF + TTC • Local DAQ • Add up to 4 large chambers: • ME 2/2/31-32 and ME3/2/31-32 • Use Counting House whenever possible • Preferred location for Spring Test • fibers installation • TF, TTC and (pseudo†) FED crate in EMU racks • EMu racks were the first to be entered in the Rack Wizard †pseudo = old DDU/CCB in peripheral mini-crate F.Geurts -- EMu Slice Test
32 32 27 27 14 16 14 16 ME3 ME2 Spring Test • A 20° sector of ME2 and ME3 chambers • one peripheral crate with 6 chambers timed in • Self-trigger using TrackFinder • EMuDAQ to Central-DAQ via S-Link • all of which in the Counting House • Spring Configuration: • ME{2,3}/1/16 + ME{2,3}/2/31-32 F.Geurts -- EMu Slice Test
Mid-term Plans • Replace electronics with final versions • as much as possible • CSC LV, CSC HV, Peripheral Crate Backplane, CRB (LV cooling), TMB (RAT), Crate Controller, DDU, DCC • SX5 is not a debugging area: use 904 to test electronics first • Extend number of participating chambers towards Magnet Test goals • limit to Sector 5 (corresponds to DT Sects. 10 and 11) • preference for ME2 and ME3 chambers F.Geurts -- EMu Slice Test
Mid-term Plans (cont’d) • Port software libraries to XDAQ v3 • CMS-DAQ preferred software environment for Magnet Test • porting guide is now available • April 25: follow-up on EMu-Central DAQ meeting • Repeat Beam-Test style cross-system integration: • Interest from HCAL for joined test (Laza Lazic et al.) • non-critical systems integration ~May/June’05 • Strong interest from Local Trigger Controller Group (Tim Christiansen et al.) • Want us to join LTC trigger integration, ~July’05 • Potential next “Summer Test” milestone • Configuration dBase Integration • Too many chambers to keep track of F.Geurts -- EMu Slice Test
