Delta Academy ReportSeptember 2008 The 2008-2009 Delta Academy Program Year promises to be an exciting one! We will introduce participants to careers in which minority women are under represented and provide opportunities for real-life applications of math, science, and technology through three exciting Learning Modules. Each Learning Module will consist of two to three sessions in which the participants will be introduced to a technical area, have the opportunity to meet and interact with professionals in that field, and complete a related hands-on experiment/project. In the “iSPACE Blast Off” Learning Module, participants will be introduced to the basic principals of rocketry and space travel. The activity will culminate with participants launching their own model rocket outdoors. This module will be conducted in collaboration with iSPACEohio.org. In the “Bridge Building” Learning Module, participants will learn about sound bridge design and construction to build their own model bridge. The exciting conclusion of the module is a competition among participants for the strongest, most efficient bridge. In the “Lights! Camera! Action!” Learning Module, participants will learn how to use audio and video equipment and editing software, to produce a short video on a socially relevant topic of their choice that they will research. This module will be conducted in collaboration with Media Bridges and the Black Data Processing Association. In addition to the three Learning Modules, Delta Academy participants will also have the opportunity to volunteer at 2-3 community service events, participate in the Fall Retreat, an all-day event conducted with the Delta G.E.M.S. Program (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully, girls ages 15-18) to build relationships and leadership skills, as well as attend several youth programs such as the College-Prep Workshop hosted by the Cincinnati Alumnae Chapter.
