  1. Welcome “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” -Dr. Seuss - I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!

  2. Reading in 2nd Grade • To learn new information • To learn how to decode words to build fluency • To apply prior knowledge • To connect to a variety of texts • To read for enjoyment • Applying higher level thinking • Reading skills from 2nd to 3rd grade is huge.

  3. Guided Reading in 2nd grade • Based on their reading level, your child will participate in a guided reading group 3-5 times a week. • During reading group, students will focus on fluency and comprehension. Later on in the year, focus will be on comprehension and using the higher level thinking skill taught in guided reading group. • Your child will bring home weekly reader(s). They will be expected to read the book at home and bring it back the next day. • There will be a $5 charge for any lost books.

  4. Spelling • Words Their Way is the district adopted spelling program • To foster the understanding of why we spell the way we do.

  5. Homework • Spelling • New words are introduced on Mon. • Spelling test is on Friday • Reading • Read for 20 minutes nightly • Log it in reading log
