General Project Overall views and concepts
Team • Adam Stagnaro (Machining) • Stephen Steger (FEA) • Karina Pikhart (Solidworks) • Sarah Cooper-Davis (MathCAD ) • Tess Veuthey
Safety Factor • n=σyield / σmax • Chosen Safety Factor: • n=3 • Worst Case Scenario • Tool Hits Chuck
Shaft Production and Calculations
Shear and Moment Diagrams Fcutting RA RB RA = -0.5 Fcutting Fcutting RB = 1.5 Fcutting -0.5 Fcutting -1.5 Fcutting
Shaft life estimation • Determined that bending stress is greatest at D (σd = 10.5 kpsi) • For 12L14 steel: • Sy = 60 kpsi • Se = 31.1 kpsi (calculated) • With given load, the part has infinite life (σd< Se) and does not yield (σd < Sy) • Safety Factor 2.96 for endurance limit • Safety Factor 5.7 for yield
Goodman Diagram • Using σm = σa = 10.5 kpsi, plotted data on Goodman diagram. • Well within acceptable range • Calculated cycles to failure: N = 1.81*1010 cycles
Spindle Error Sources • Manufacturing • Thermal • Material • Bearing • Deflection • Vibrations
