Treaty of Kanagawa • Shogun agreed to 2 trading ports • This is the first of many treaties • Many japaneese felt Shogun was weak to foreigners (Samurai) • Others felt needed to modernize in order to compete with industrial west • Eventually rebellion overthrew shogun • After rebellion restored emperor to power- Meiji • Changed whole feudalistic system
Meiji Restoration • Great change to Japan in late 1800’s • Expanded trade • Attempted to westernize • Meiji kept identity and traditions • Built factories to develop and sold to wealthy families (zaibatso) • Railroads- population grew • Strong centralized government • Chose Germany as model for government • Autocratic power- 2 house legislature • Women still limited
Russo-Japan War • Competing for new markets • War Russia vs. Japan for Korea • Japan crushes Russia with militaristic power • Treaty of Portsmouth • gave Japan Complete control of Korea as well as Manchuria 1904-1905 • Russia had to stay out of Korea • Japan- sphere of influence • Korea annexed because of vast raw materials • Harsh rulers

Social Political Economical Effects • Socially, A sense of nationalism has since been adapted because of the Meiji Restoration. Also the period of Isolation is now over so now the country has a very large population in proportion to its size • Economically, Japan is ranked 19th out of 111 countries for productivity. It’s economic growth has been “spectacular” according to world economic outlook data base • Politically, Japan is a parliamentary monarchy governed by a Prime minister and his cabinet. The Emperor has lost most of its decisional power after world war II
