I. Tokugawa Japan • Shoguns- supreme military dictators who ruled Japan • Tokugawa- family of shoguns who ruled Japan • Restored feudalism • Closed Japan to foreigners • Stifled Japan’s economy and growth
Question 1 • Why was there discontent in Tokugawa Japan?
II. Japan Opens Up • In 1853 U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry, sailed into Tokyo Bay with a letter from Pres. Fillmore demanding Japan open its ports to trade • Japan was forced to accept unequal treaties with the U.S • Discontent in Japan boiled over with foreign pressure
III. Japan Modernizes • Meiji Restoration- Japan overthrows the shogun and restores the emperor • Japan reorganized their government • Strong central government • Diet- Japanese legislature • Ended feudalism and special privilege for Samurai • Japan adapts Western technology and industrializes • Japan modernized with amazing speed
