Water Related Morbidity • 50% of deaths in Pakistan are due to water and sanitation related diseases • 1 in 5 children has diarrhoea at any given time • Demand for Water Supply and Sanitation • Over 1000 villages require new schemes or rehabilitation • Around 600 villages have submitted their applications • Government lack Resources and Capacity in addressing the demand • Extensive Research Phase • Majority of old schemes failed due to lack of O&M - Village Capacity • Poor personal, domestic, environmental hygiene • Demand for various types of sanitation and Water treatment technologies intro ImpetusforIntervention

WASEP’s overarching Goal is to reduce diarrhoeal morbidity by 50 % in its partner communities in the Northern areas and Chitral How • -Reliable supply of safe drinking water in sufficient quantities ; • -Improving access to sanitation facility; • -Developing capacity of the community • -Enhance gender equity; • -Help empowering the common people; • -Facilitate the adoption of healthier behavior towards personal, domestic,and environmental hygiene; • -Establishing operational and sustainable village based management structure Goal and specific objectives

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE FUND • Two prong approach for financing • Establishment of Operation and Maintenance Fund Upfront • Monthly Water Tariff Collection VILLAGE SPARES STOCK • Villagers purchase spares at 2% of the cost of the project • Revolving Spares Stock CONTRIBUTION FOR CONSTRUCTION Community’s Contribution • Formation of WSC in General Body meeting • Un-skilled labour • Local Material • Piece of land required for the hydraulic structure • Pipes would be laid below freezing level • Conflict Resolution (if any) WASEP’s Contribution • All the purchased material • Wages for skilled labour • Technical assistance and supervision • Capacity Building (Training for WSC, WSO and WSI) • Tool kit for WSO TermsofPartnership

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE WSO • Operators trained to follow the process schematic so they can locate joints and junctions in buried pipes: emergency shut-off valves etc. • Pressure testing and leak detection. • Operator have trained to periodically examine the system for breaks, corrosion , and mechanical failure • Routine cleaning of filters and traps. • Preventing contamination: this includes the prevention of the bed practices (allow animals near a water point) and repairing key contamination barriers water run-off, covers, reservoirs etc) • Regular repairs to fitting and taps.
