Water Collection and Sanitation Katie Eng Dayton Pickering Jessica Riccio Rury Velasquez and Ian Buck
Problem Statement • The conditions of the water in San Pablo are for the most part unknown • There is an abundance of rainwater in the wet season and a lack of water for agricultural purposes in the dry season
Project Challenges • Our proposed problem was not realized upon arriving in San Pablo • After observing the conditions in San Pablo, we discovered that a Slow Sand Filter was not the most appropriate technology for the people here • The materials we needed were not always available • Research and communication were difficult
Water Collection • Gutter system on Casa Guateca • Rainwater collection tank to be used in the kitchen area
Gutter System and Tank • Designed wooden crutches to hold the gutters • Connected the downspout to the collection tank using PVC • Fixed leaks and erosion points caused by system
Water Sanitation • Water sample tests from each source • Water sample tests from house drinking and tap water
Water Testing from Sources • Hiked to the four sources in San Pablo to take water samples • Tested samples taken with test strips and turbid meter
Water Testing from Home Sources • Took water samples from each group’s house in San Pablo • Tested water samples with test strips and turbid meter
Future Project • Continue testing on boiling water times v. effectiveness • Come up with possible solutions for housing water sanitation • Research Chlorination techniques used and appropriateness for San Pablo
