Pondok Pesantren Suryalaya was establish by Syaikh Abdullah bin Nur Muhammad or more known as Abah Sepuh, which in the establishment they have many obstacles, whether from Dutch Colonial Government and from publics, also by the geographical condition. • The name of Pondok Pesantren Suryalaya itself was taken from a Sundanese term that is Surya = Sun, Laya = a place to rise, so Suryalaya literary means the place where the sun rose. • Pondok Pesantren Suryalaya is getting more and more developed from years to years, so in March 11, 1961 based on the initiatives of H. Sewaka (Alm) ex Governor of West Java (1947 – 1952) and ex Minister of Defense of Republic of Indonesia, Iwa Kusuma Sumantri (Alm) (1952 – 1953), they establishes Serba Bakti Pondok Pesantren Suryalaya Foundation. Summary • It is interesting to know that two leaders of this thariqat (Qadariyah-Naqsyabandiyah or TQN) are from military academics that know how to explain their practical rituals academically and based on verses and tradition of the prophet. And they are now trying to tell others that their practical rituals are not an obstacle to gain a progress even in scientific things and the economical things. • The most interesting place we visited is Inabah XV. We went there after visiting Suryalaya boarding School. Inabah is a kind of Islamic boarding house used for recovering of psychological-patalogics of children. • In the Inabah we saw many children from any background—some of them are drug abusers, mentally unhealed, etc—have been being religiously teached in order to be a good children or a normal kid. Some of them has been living for two months and the longest one is ten months. When they get better usually their family will pick them up. Student Affairs Department - The Islamic College Jakarta
Conclusion • We came to conclusion that this field trip inspired four pointers: • A. We can learn about indigenous local mysticism in Indonesia • B. We can learn about how to manage Islamic Psychological Therapy for the sake of mental healing activity • C. We can also understand more about Practical Mysticism through spreading Mystical values by particular activities in daily life. • D. So, we can proof that Islamic values significantly still useful in the modern age. Student Affairs Department - The Islamic College Jakarta
