Teaching LEP students in the state of Maryland effectively to improve their achievement in the content areas and their English language proficiency. • Content areas: Math, Science, Social Studies
Training secondary teachers and teacher candidates to use effective teaching methods and approaches for improving LEP student achievement in content areas.
Training Secondary Education Professors and teacher leaders in local school systems to become effective trainers for secondary teachers and teacher candidates at UMBC and statewide to improve the achievement of all LEP students in Maryland.
Design “ESOL Module” for each content area. • Pilot ESOL modules in HCPSS-UMBC in-service cohort program. • Evaluate and revise ESOL modules for f2f and online delivery.
Hire and train teacher leaders to deliver the ESOL module for in-service training. • Implement ESOL modules in pre- and in-service teacher education programs through UMBC in-house, in cohorts, and statewide.
Design training program with manual, student training booklet, and supplementary videos and DVDs for all modules. • Publish training program for future use at UMBC and statewide.
