The benefits of using technology in languages Young people’s familiarity with ICT offers a great opportunity to language teachers. It seems to us that a determined commitment to use this world, which is so familiar to young people, is a key to increasing the engagement of young people of all ages with languages. New technologies can facilitate real contacts with schools and young people in other countries. They can also provide stimulus for creative and interactive work. Dearing Review 2007
Examples of good practice
What language skills are being assessed? What is the success criteria? E.g. (improve pronunciation, ask & answer Qs/ produce longer sentences with connectives etc.)
What tech would be best? How does it enhance the process? (publishing / creativity / redrafting/ motivation)
What tech skills will the students need? Do they know the tool? Will they need practice? How confident am I as teacher using the tool? Do I have a helpsheet they could use?
Planning of teaching sessions and timings as part of medium term Scheme of Work e.g.
Lesson 1 Introduce new language
Lesson 2 Extending structures / listening and reading comprehension
Lesson 3 Modelling tech examples and students planning their own
Lesson 4 Students preparing, practicing and producing their tech outcomes
Lesson 5 Giving feedback and facilitating peer assessment
