  4. Formal letter Write your address. Write the date. If you don’t know someone’s name, start with Dear Sir/Madam. If you know someone’s name, start with Dear Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms + family name. Use polite and formal English. If you started with Dear Sir/Madam, finish with Yours faithfully + your name and family name. If you started with Dear Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms + family name, finish with Yours sincerely + your name and family name.
