Places and Perspectives: Middle School • Olha Shkarupa & Inna Suprunenko • Class 7 • Secondary school of Lisovi Sorochintsi, village of Lisovi Sorochintsi, Chernihiv Oblast, Ukraine • Topic – Picturesque Ukraine For Guests From All Over the World • Level – Middle School • Download document – Microsoft PowerPoint presentation
Project Idea • Last year Ukraine hosted a lot of football fans from different countries. We hope people enjoyed our country, culture and people. Sometimes our guests had problems because not too many Ukrainian people could speak English well. Ukrainian students and EFL teachers did volunteer work to help foreign people in different situations. • As for our project idea we would like to know about the ways people learn foreign languages and study at school in countries abroad. We hope your opinions and suggestions will help us to change this situation for better.
The Questionnaire • Is it easy for foreigners to travel in your country? Do many native people speak English? • Can your parents and grandparents speak English well? What foreign languages did they learn at school? • Do you speak a foreign language to your parents? • Are there any English magazines and newspapers you can prescribe to in your country? • Are your EFL teachers foreigners? • How many English lessons do you have per day/per week? • How long is your lesson? • Are there any school clubs for those who study foreign languages? • Do you learn English after school? How long per day/week?
The Questionnaire • What activities do you like most? • Do you have pen friends to practice your skills? • What do you think is the best way to learn a foreign language? • What can help us to be better learners? • What can we do to change this situation for better? • Other ideas.

Our Opinions & Suggestions Today, millions of people want to learn or improve their English but it is difficult to find the best method. Is it better to study in Britain or America or to study in your own country? The advantages of going to Britain seem obvious. Firstly, you will be able to listen to the language all the time you are in the country. You will be surrounded completely by the language wherever you go. Another advantage is that you have to speak the language if you are with other people.
Staying at Home to Study On the other hand, there are also advantages of staying at home to study. You don’t have to make big changes to your life. As well as this, it is also much cheaper than going to Britain but it is never possible to achieve the results of living in the UK. So, in conclusion, I think that if you have enough time and money, the best choice is to spend some time in the UK. As for most Ukrainian people, this is simply not possible. The most important thing to do in this situation is to maximize your opportunities: to speak only English in class and to try to use English whenever possible outside the class. http://www.esl-lounge.com”

Our Partners’ Suggestions • Students from Moscow think the best way to learn a language is to speak this language, watch movies with subtitles of this language, learn the rules… • Students from Belarus think we ought to read more, to communicate more, to travel more, to take part in the international projects.
Remember! • Live and learn. • A little learning is a dangerous thing. • Lost time is never found again. • It’s never too late to learn.
