Liftgate Battery Charging Systems THE PROBLEM • Multiple stops in metropolitan areas severely limits charging time for liftgate batteries, leading to non-working liftgates and expensive service calls. • With anti-idling laws, this problem is compounded because the liftgate can only use power from the liftgate battery • Traditional charging methods don’t charge liftgate battery to full capacity
Current Liftgate Charging Systems Systems charging from the tractor do not operate when tractor key is in the OFF position. Current can flow both ways – If the tractor batteries are failing or in a lower state of charge, the liftgate batteries will try to help start the tractor. The reefer batteries ONLY charge the liftgate batteries when the reefer is running If the Dual Pole system should fail (ie not plugged in all the way), the reefer will supply power as it is available.
PERMALOGIC™ SELECTOR SYSTEM THE SOLUTION PHILLIPS NEW PERMALOGIC™ SELECTOR SYSTEM! This is the first system to select between the tractor or reefer power to provide a constant charge of 14.4 volts to the liftgate batteries by switching between the tractor and reefer power with no driver intervention!
How It Works… How does the Selector System work? A typical liftgate battery is charged using the tractor batteries. Even if the tractor batteries were pushing out 14.4V, a liftgate battery would receive around 12.5V (at best!). This allows for almost 2V of unused capacity in the liftgate battery. The PERMALOGIC™ SELECTOR SYSTEM charges the liftgate batteries to a full 14.4V, allowing for maximum liftgate cycles.
How It Works… When the tractor is started, the PERMALOGIC™ SELECTOR SYSTEM immediately starts to monitor the tractor and reefer battery to determine the best charging source based on charging capacity. Charging from the tractor is the default setting and will always be the priority if both sources are available. The Selector System will protect the reefer charging system and will never drain the reefer batteries
How It Works… • If tractor batteries are greater than 12.2v, liftgate batteries are charged by tractor power via the dual pole system • If tractor batteries are less than 12.2V and reefer battery are greater than 13.2V, power is automatically changed to reefer battery • If tractor batteries are less than 12.2V AND reefer battery has less than 13.2V, liftgate batteries will not be charged until the reefer system starts up Reefer Battery Reefer Battery PERMALOGIC™ SELECTOR PS Liftgate Batteries TractorBatteries Liftgate Batteries Liftgate Batteries PERMALOGIC™ SELECTOR TractorBatteries TractorBatteries PERMALOGIC™ SELECTOR Liftgate Batteries TractorBatteries 8
Benefits of the SELECTOR SYSTEM Charges the liftgate batteries whether the trailer is hooked up to a truck, or sitting idle. Maximizes the charging time to the liftgate batteries for heavy cycle liftgates. Provides a 14.4V, 20 amp charge to liftgate batteries, charging them to FULL capacity. Requires no driver intervention – it is completely automated Ensures liftgate batteries will have enough capacity to unload a trailer without failure.
Benefits of the SELECTOR SYSTEM • The system can be connected to a Trailer with an existing Trail Charger by simply disconnecting from the 7 way and connecting to the Selector System • LED Diagnostic Indicator allowing the driver to check: • Tractor charge status • Reefer charge status • Reefer dome lamp status • Available with Dome Lamp Shut Off Control • Prevents drivers from leaving dome lamps on by using the same technology as the PERMALOGIC™ to shut off dome lights when the brake pedal is engaged
The Selector SYSTEM includes • A SELECTOR monitoring device enclosed in the Phillips weather tight Q-Box housing • A Trail Charger 14.4v DC to DC converter • A surge protected Harness for a secure connection to the reefer unit. • The Phillips Dual Pole Socket • An Integrated Dome Lamp Controller (Option)
PERMALOGIC™ SELECTOR SYSTEM Depending on the position of the battery box, the fleet has 3 Trail Charger Harness options: • Front/Mid Position – 35’ TC Lead PN 60-2991 • Mid/Rear Position – 45’ TC Lead PN 60-2992 • 53’ Rear Position – 55’ TC Lead PN 60-2993 • Included in Harness Package: • 10’ Battery Lead – Blunt Cut • TC Weather Pack Connector • SELETOR to TC Lead, Blunt Cut • 2 – 8ga. #10 SNS Ring Terminals • 2 8ga. 3/8” SNS Ring Terminals
Trail Charger • Think of it as similar to a stereo amplifier • Increases 12v input power to 14.4v output to charge the liftgate batteries to maximum capacity • Is controlled by the PERMALOGIC™ SELECTOR to manage charge on/off • The Trail Charger is a critical part of the PERMALOGIC™ SELECTOR SYSTEM - both are needed to ensure the system functions properly
The Market • Who is the PERMALOGIC™ SELECTOR SYSTEM Fleet Target? • Food Service Fleets with Reefers and Liftgates • Fleets with Syrup Pumps (to supply Soft Drink syrup) • Active in Metropolitan areas • Short Distances between deliveries • Low Highway miles between deliveries • US Foods, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Domino’s, CVS • Fleets that don’t do dock-to-dock deliveries. • The most likely fleet prospect will operate a fleet of trailers equipped with reefers and liftgates. A fleet that delivers products in an metropolitan environment that requires numerous liftgate cycles where the truck rarely runs at highway speeds for more than a short period of time preventing the alternator from sufficiently re-charging the batteries.
The Competitors The bottom line is that our only competitor is simply a better battery and does nothing to correct the problem of battery power drain. The Eon is a better battery and is priced accordingly but it will eventually fail just like any battery. National Sales Meeting March 24, 2004
