Caffeine • Caffeine can result in mild insomnia • Restlessness • It can cause panic attacks, irregular heartbeats, and sleep disorders • Can cause stomach discomfort • It is often not recognized as a drug
Alcohol • Causes massive liver damage, eventually resulting in cirrhosis • Damages brain cells • There are approximately 79,000 deaths in the US every year because of excessive alcohol consumption • Results in immediate health risks as well as long term health risks
Alcohol Continued • Impairs decision making skills • Increases likeliness of violence • Increases the risk of unintentional injury • Can result in alcohol poisoning • Increases the possibility of risky sexual behaviors
Alcohol Continued • Psychiatric problems • Social problems • Cardiovascular damage • Neurological damage • Increased likeliness of cancer • Gastrointestinal problems
MDMA • Increases the release of serotonin in the brain • After effects include anxiety, • Paranoia • Depression • Fatigue • Overdosing is possible • Overdoses can have long term Physiological and psychological effects
Cocaine • Cocaine can be injected, injected, and snorted • Cocaine has negative short term and long term effects • Severe long term effects are irregular heart beats, heart attack, chest pain, respiratory failure, and stroke • Cocaine is addicting, and quitting once addicted results in withdrawls
Amphetamine • Amphetamines are nervous system stimulants • Include some prescription dugs and some illegal ones • Prescription amphetamines include Dexedrine, Desoxyn, and Ritalin • Prescription amphetamines are often sold illegally to recreational users
Methamphetamine • Causes your brain to release excess dopamine • Dopamine is a chemical that gives positive feelings • It is part of the reward mechanism in the brain • The receptors for dopamine shut down after prolonged exposure to high levels of dopamine • Thus causing damage to the reward centers in the brains of meth users
Methamphetamine • Meth has similar physical effects as other stimulants • It is extremely addictive • It’s highly addictive nature causes users to ignore other health risks • Causes meth bugs and meth mouth • It is often used in it’s crystal form
Inhalants • Chemical vapors that are inhaled for mind altering effects • Common household supplies • Easily obtained • Cause brain and nervous system damage • Can cause death • Can cause hearing loss • Shown to damage bone marrow
Heroin • Users tend to not use sterile injection needle • This results in large rates of infection among users • High rates of liver disease is a characteristic of the heroin using population • High rates of kidney disease are also common • Heroin is extremely addictive and causes users to develop a tolerance
Heroin continued • It is nearly impossible for heroin users to know the purity and strength of the heroin they are using • This results in the potential for overdose • Overdose often results in death • When heroin users stop using the drug they will enter into withdrawal • Withdrawal symptoms include bone pain and vomiting
Heroin continued • Medications are available for people who need to quit using heroin • These include methadone, Buprenorphine, and Naltrexone • Other names for heroin are: diacetylmorphine, diamorphine, black tar, dope (heroin), dust, H, horse, junk, smack, and scag
Morphine • Morphine is a narcotic and a nervous system depressant • It can be very addictive • It impairs brain function and thinking as well as causing brain damage due to neurotoxins in it • It weakens the strength of the immune system • This increases the rates of infection
GHB • GHB is a club drug that works as central nervous system depressant • It is highly powerful and quick acting • It is usually eaten, but is also often sold in the form of a powder • When mixed with liquids it is nearly undetectable
GHB continued • Deep sleep and sometimes commas can result • It is often used as a date rape drug • Side effects of taking it include: vomiting, delusion, hallucinations, vertigo, and nausea • Overdoses can occur but are uncommon
PCP • PCP is a dissociative anesthetic that was originally developed for surgical use • It can be ingested in pill form • In powder form it is often smoked, and snorted • It effects the receptors in your brain that are involved with emotion, cognition, and pain perception
PCP continued • Immediate effects of using PCP are increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and increased body temperatures • It is dangerous due to the unpredictability of it’s effects • Long term use can result in adiction
