CULTURAL ADJUSTMENT • No tipping • Bikes • Language • Explicit & Implicitdifferences • Your reaction to the differences might progress through stages (denial, defense, acceptance) • Not Tisch in Amsterdam, Not NYC • Not always better or worse • Try not to stereotype • People are complex, avoid generalizations! • Research culture • Communication plan with family & friends • Journal ! • While overseas, contact Amsterdam Staff if you are struggling • Take responsibility • Make a plan What do you know about Amsterdam?   7. ARRIVAL US Passport holders do not need a visa. You will enter as a tourist and have 90 days to travel EU. • Go directly to school at Lindengracht 93 by 1pm • If flight is delayed, go directly to housing • Cab from Amsterdam Central Station is the easiest • Can take a train directly from Schiphol Airport to Central Station

PACKING • RECOMMENDED • TO BRING: • Light, comfortable clothing • Sunscreen • Water bottle • Laptop • Book bag (weekend trips and groceries) • Battery-operated travel alarm clock • Linens optional(provided by NYU) • Camera (battery charger) • Toiletries you love, brands are different/expensive • Over the counter meds • Combination lock • Raincoat • Lots of studio clothing • CONSULT A TRAVEL GUIDE • READ BLOG EVALUATIONS • DOS AND DONTS… • MUST BRING: • Passport/Visa • Any medication (copies of the prescription written in generic term) • Walking shoes • Adapters • DON’T BRING: • Electronics - Hairdryers, Electric razors • Kitchen utensils • Linens • UNDERPACK NOW FOR RETURN HOME • AIRLINE RESTRICTIONS

HOUSING IN AMSTERDAM • 1st and last week of program – Christian run Hostel (Shelter) • Will not impart beliefs, but conservative • No alcohol on premises • Permanent Housing – single studios • Amsterdam Public University System • Kitchenette and shared bathroom • Laundry facilities on site • Short walk to classes, but you will need to buy a bike • IMPORTANT FOR ALL HOUSING • Live in NYU housing only • Top Apply Supplemental Forms– can’t select housing option • Housing violations can result in expulsion from the program

MONEY & EXPENSES Euro - ATM /credit cards best Research ATM fees - Alert banks/credit cards $1 = € .78(www.xe.com) - Emergency credit card BUDGET Arrive with Euro -BLOG tips ($150/wk) EXPENSES FINANCIAL AID & SCHOLARSHIPS Regular NYU tuition & Registration fees • EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT • BUDGETING = PLANNING • Program fee ($640) - Lab fee ($535) • NYU Housing ($2,500 - $200 refundable deposit) • ESTIMATES: Airfare: $1,000 - $1,500, Meals: $700, Miscellaneous: $500 • SEMESTER ESTIMATE: $2,000 - $3,000 (beyond NYU bill)

  14. TIPS Register with the U.S. State Dept. Travel outside the program – must inform director Zero alcohol abuse & drug use policy Local laws & behavior – violations can result in harsher penalties not just failing/leaving program Common sense/Street smarts: be conscientious! ESPECIALLY nightlife, money/ATMs, traveling, passport and personal belongings & DRINKING – decision making, unfamiliar country WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY Know your emergency numbers Report to Director and Police NYU files a report with Public Safety SAFETY • #1 TIP: • TAKE RESPONSIBILITY • FOR YOURSELF
